Problems with prices

A metre of ribbon costs $0,50\ €$. A kilo of cherries costs $5,80\ €$. A square metre of wooden flooring costs $18\ €$. When you know the price of one unit, you can work out the price of any amount... as long as you first convert it to that unit.

The price per unit

Diagram comparing the price of $1\text{ m}$ of ribbon ($0{,}50\text{ €}$) with the calculation for $2{,}4\text{ m}$ ($1{,}20\text{ €}$). 1 m of ribbon 0,50 € 2 m 40 cm = 2,4 m 1,20 €

The key step: convert before multiplying

Almost all the mistakes in these problems come from multiplying without first converting the amount to the same unit as the price.

Diagram showing the conversion of $750\text{ g}$ of cherries to $0{,}75\text{ kg}$ and the calculation of their cost at $5{,}80\text{ €/kg}$, giving $4{,}35\text{ €}$. 750 g = 0,75 kg 5,80 € · 0,75 = 4,35 €

In your local greengrocer's, a kilogram of Jerte cherries costs $5,80 €$. If you decide to buy a bag containing $750 \text{ g}$ of cherries and pay with a $10 €$ note, how much change will you receive?

5,80 €/kg 750 g ÷ 1000 0,75 kg 10,00 € - Cost of cherries 0,75 × 5,80 € Change = ?

Prices with lengths and areas

The same method works when the price is per metre or per square metre: you convert the amount to that unit and multiply.

Plan of a room $4\text{ m}$ long by $3{,}5\text{ m}$ ($350\text{ cm}$) wide with the calculation of its area of $14\text{ m}^2$. 4 m 350 cm = 3,5 m Area = 4 · 3,5 = 14 m²

Prices with capacities and comparing offers

Sometimes you have to decide which offer is better value: to compare them, work out the price of the same amount in both.

Visual comparison of the price per kilogram of two jars of jam of different sizes. 450 g for 3,15 €3,15 : 0,45 = 7 €/kg 650 g for 4,55 €4,55 : 0,65 = 7 €/kg

Problems with several sections

Some problems mix pieces in different units: convert them all before adding and multiplying by the price.
