Logarithms

How many years do you have to wait for a sum of money to double at a fixed interest rate? How many times bigger is a magnitude 7 earthquake than a magnitude 5 one? Both questions have the same structure: an unknown is "hidden" in an exponent, and the tool to free it is the logarithm, the inverse operation of raising to a power.

To understand the relationship between powers and logarithms, complete the following table by converting each exponential equality into its corresponding logarithmic form, based on the definition $\log_a b = x \iff a^x = b$:

Exponential Form Logarithmic Form
$2^5 = 32$ $\log_2 32 = 5$
$3^4 = 81$
$10^{-2} = 0,01$
