Cell Phones, Tablets, and Other Devices

In Mexico, 97.1 % of the people who go online do it with a cell phone and only 44.0 % with a computer (ENDUTIH 2023). Your cell phone fits in your pocket and a desktop computer takes up half a table, but on the inside they are relatives. Here you will discover what they share, how they differ, and how to choose the right device without spending too much or throwing away a device that still works.

Relatives of Different Sizes

On the outside they are very different. On the inside, they all solve the same problem: calculating, storing, and displaying data.

Desktop computer, tablet, cell phone, and smartwatch drawn at approximate scale: they are very different on the outside, but all have a CPU, RAM, and storage. Computer big screen Tablet Cell phone Watch smart all have inside CPU · RAM · storage

What changes between them is their size, whether they have a battery, and what task they are designed for. Also, processor speed is measured in hertz (Hz): a current cell phone works at several GHz, just like a laptop.

The Right Device for Each Task

Comparison of cell phone, tablet, and laptop ordered from smallest to largest screen size, with the tasks best suited to each one. Cell phone Tablet Laptop messages, quick photos read, watch video, draw essays, edit small screen big screen

Other devices have a very specific task: the e-reader (an electronic ink screen for reading for hours without tiring your eyes), the console (it connects to the TV and is controlled with a controller), and the smartwatch (it is worn on the wrist and measures steps or pulse).

Tablet or Laptop for Studying?

A tablet with a keyboard case costs almost the same as a laptop. To decide, compare what you need to do: take notes, do assignments, and take online exams.

Tablet with keyboard case Laptop
Advantages Light, good battery life, digital pencil for handwritten notes, also used for reading and watching video Comfortable keyboard, several windows at once, full programs (LibreOffice, for example), USB ports
Disadvantages Small keyboard and screen, few windows at once, some programs and exam platforms do not work the same Heavier, less battery life, you cannot draw or write on the screen

If your tasks are mostly writing, using spreadsheets, and taking online exams, the laptop does better. If you take handwritten notes and read a lot, the tablet may be enough, but first check that your school accepts exams taken on one.

Choosing the Main Device for a Trip

When you work away from home and there are not always power outlets, these criteria matter:

  • Screen: for reviewing and selecting photos or long texts, the bigger and better, the more comfortable.

  • Battery life: hours the battery lasts on one charge; with no outlets, it is decisive.

  • Weight and size: what you carry all day.

  • Storage: photos and videos take up a lot of space; it is a good idea to keep a copy somewhere else.

Useful accessories: protective case, external battery (portable charger), spare cable and charger, headphones, USB drive or external disk for backups, and an external keyboard if the device is small.

A manufacturer commissions you to define the technical specifications of the ideal computer or tablet for 1st-year ESO students with a budget limit of 250 pesos per unit. Resolve these three technical trade-offs, justifying your decision for each one: 1) Screen size: 8 inches (very light but small text) or 11 inches (heavier but better visual ergonomics)? 2) Casing: ultra-thin aluminum or ruggedised plastic with shockproof rubber corners? 3) Battery: 4000 mAh (lightweight device) or 7500 mAh (more weight in the backpack)? Finally, explain why buying the most expensive and powerful model in a store (for example, a 1200 pesos laptop) for this use would be a technical and practical mistake.

How Much Fits in Your Pocket

In this section we will use a single equivalence to do the calculations: $1\ \text{GB} = 1\,000\ \text{MB}$. This is the one used on commercial labels (powers of 10).

Bar of a cell phone's total memory divided into three parts: system and apps, videos, and free space, with the warning that the advertised free space is not all the space available. system + apps videos free total memory the "free" space on the label is never all the space available

Knowing that $1\ \text{GB}$ is equivalent to $1\,000\ \text{MB}$, calculate using the division $\frac{64\,000\ \text{MB}}{12\ \text{MB}}$ how many photos would fit if the cell phone were empty, and then explain two reasons why in reality significantly fewer fit.

An e-reader has $8\ \text{GB}$ of storage and each book takes up on average $2\ \text{MB}$. Calculate using the division $\frac{8\,000\ \text{MB}}{2\ \text{MB}}$ how many books fit and estimate how many years you could read at a rate of one book a day (a year has $365$ days). Smaller but Better: Miniaturization and Aging

A large 2016 chip and a much smaller 2026 chip. Both have the same number of transistor blocks, but in the new one they are tinier and use less energy to do the same work. 2016 chip 2026 chip new generation more energy less energy same work, less space and less energy

Batteries, on the other hand, age: every charge and discharge cycle wears them down a little, so a one-year-old cell phone lasts less than when it was new. Over time the battery holds less energy, and heat speeds up this wear.

The Greenest Device Is the One You Already Have

Making a cell phone requires mining, a factory, and shipping, with a large impact; using it uses only a little energy each day. The manufacturing impact is spread over more years if the device lasts 6 years than if it lasts 2. make use lots of energy and materials a little each day The impact of making is spread over the years of use 2 years 6 years manufacturing impact per year of use

This is technological pollution: it is produced not only when using the device, but also when making it and when throwing it away, when it becomes electronic waste. That is why it pays to extend its useful life: replace the battery or the screen, update the system for as long as possible, use a case and a screen protector, and give away, sell, or take to an electronic waste collection center the device you no longer use, instead of throwing it in the trash.

Back to the beginning: in Mexico almost all of us go online with a cell phone, so taking care of the one you already have (battery, screen, updates) is the simplest way to reduce the environmental impact of everything digital.
