Programs and Applications

Ximena wants to make a poster for her high school's Day of the Dead celebration. Her phone has dozens of apps, but she doesn't know which one to use, or whether it's safe to download the one a friend recommended from a link. On this page you'll learn to tell the types of software apart, choose the right application, and install it, update it and remove it without risk.

System software and application software

Layers of a device: the hardware supports the system software (Windows, Android) and this allows the application software (browser, games) to run. SOFTWARE application browser games system Windows Android hardware

Here is the rule: if a program makes the device work and lets other programs run, it is system software. If it solves a task for you, it is an application. Without an operating system, applications can't run, but the operating system is not "just another application."

Choosing the right application

Four application windows: a word processor for writing, a browser for browsing, a music player and an image editor. write browse music photos

There are proprietary programs and free alternatives that do the same thing. LibreOffice (Writer, Calc, Impress) is a free suite that replaces a paid office package, at no cost. That way Ximena can make her poster with Impress or GIMP without paying for a license.

Installing safely

Three download sources leading to a phone, from safest to riskiest: official store, official website and pop-up ad. official store official website pop-up ad phone safest riskiest

There is also software as a service: applications you use from the browser that live on a company's servers (web-based email, an online word processor). Advantages of the web version: it takes up no space and it updates itself. Advantages of the installed application: it works offline and is usually faster. You would choose the web version for an occasional task on a borrowed computer, and the installed one for working without internet.

Updating and uninstalling

Life cycle of an application: search, install, update regularly and uninstall. search install update uninstall

Examples of what an update improves: a bug fixed (the app stopped opening), a new feature (dark mode) or security (a hole attackers were using gets patched). If you skip updating for years, you pile up known security flaws and the app may stop working with a system that does get updated. That's why it's a good idea to keep automatic updates turned on.

When duplicate apps pile up

Having three photo editors sounds convenient, but it has a cost. Advantages: you can try different tools. Drawbacks: they take up space, each one needs updating, each one may ask for permissions, and it's harder to know where you saved your photos. To keep just one, the most useful criterion is real use: keep the one you actually open and that does what you need. Then look at the space it takes up (if two are similar, remove the heavier one) and finally the ratings, which help break a tie but don't replace your own experience.

Leo's phone has run out of space. His applications are: Game A taking $2\ \text{GB}$ that he hasn't opened for $8$ months, a video editor taking $1.5\ \text{GB}$ that he uses every week, Game B taking $900\ \text{MB}$ that he uses daily, a banking app taking $150\ \text{MB}$, and three games taking $300\ \text{MB}$ each that he hasn't touched since last school year. Design his clean-up plan: what he would uninstall first, what he would never touch, and how much space he would recover with each decision.

Deciding with good judgment

The hard exercises ask you to combine everything above. Use these criteria:

  • Source: official store or official site; never installers (.apk files) passed along by message or download websites.

  • Permissions: do they make sense for the task?

  • Real cost: a "free" app may charge for parts of it or live off ads and your data. Compare with math: if a paid game costs $\$60$ once and the "free" one charges $\$15$ each time you want to play more, after 4 uses you've already paid the same.

  • Maintenance: an app pulled from the store for security reasons no longer gets patches; continuing to use it leaves holes and eventually makes it incompatible with the system.

  • Accessibility: if you're setting up a device for someone else (for example, your grandmother), turn on large-text and contrast settings, restrict the store and permissions, and leave only a few apps with a clean interface.

  • Backup: before uninstalling or updating something important, copy your files.

  • No duplicates: if two apps do the same thing, keep the one you actually use.

Marcos wants to install a racing game on his tablet and is hesitating between two options:

• Game A (paid): costs $\$3.50$ as a one-time payment, with all tracks unlocked and no ads.

• Game B (“free”): allows playing $2$ races per day; to play more without waiting $4$ hours, you must pay $\$0.80$ per fuel pass, or watch ads that consume mobile data.

  1. a) If Marcos plays $4$ races daily for a month ($30$ days) and buys the necessary passes to avoid waiting, calculate how much money he will spend on Game B and compare it with the cost of Game A.
  2. b) Explain why the Game B model is usually much more profitable for developers than selling the game outright, analyzing which software design mechanisms it uses to encourage spending.
  3. c) Design two technical measures that Marcos should configure in his tablet's operating system to avoid spending money impulsively or by mistake.
