It's Buen Fin (Mexico's big shopping weekend) and Ximena finds a pair of sneakers at an incredible price on a site she has never seen before. Shopping without leaving home is convenient, but it is also the favorite hunting ground of people who want to cheat you. How can she tell a real deal from a trap? A few simple checks separate a safe purchase from a nasty surprise.

Before paying: checks and payment methods

Before payment, the figure includes the review step: padlock and https, contact details, return conditions, and total price. After payment, saving the confirmation and the invoice gives you proof if you need to file a complaint.

Secure payments: verification and cards

A stranger who only has a card number tries to pay at an online store; the bank sends a code to the cardholder's phone and, without that code, the payment is blocked. card number known by someone Online store Pay payment Bank Code 482 915 cardholder's phone without the code, it is blocked

This step adds a second factor: something you have (your phone) in addition to something you know (the card details). If someone knows your number but doesn't have your phone, the bank doesn't authorize the payment.

Which card to use: debit, prepaid, or virtual

Not all cards carry the same risk if their number is leaked. The difference lies in where the money comes from.

  • Debit card linked to an account (for example, the family account): each purchase is deducted directly from that account's balance. Its limit is everything in the account, plus the daily limits the bank or you set. If the number leaks and the second factor fails or is handed over, the damage can reach the entire balance, which may also be the family's money.

  • Rechargeable prepaid card: you only spend what you loaded onto it beforehand, whether at a convenience store, by transfer, or from an app. It is a good natural limit for a minor with supervision: whoever gets the number can take, at most, that balance. If you keep a low balance and reload only right before buying, the risk drops a lot. Its downside is that it sometimes charges fees and doesn't have all the protections of a full bank account.

  • One-time-use or limited-balance virtual card, which some bank apps generate: it works for one purchase and then stops being valid. If the store suffers a breach, that data can no longer be used for another purchase.

In every case, turn on notifications for each purchase on your phone and check your transactions. If you don't recognize something, tell the bank right away.

Payment gateways and tokenization

Many stores use a payment gateway with tokenization: your card is stored with the payment processor and the store keeps only a substitute code (token) that is useless outside that store. This is safer than keeping the full details on the store's servers.

Buying from a foreign store

A low price at a store in another country can be misleading, because when the package arrives in Mexico it may go through customs. There, charges are added that the store doesn't always show:

  • Import VAT: the same VAT you pay at a Mexican store, calculated on the value of what you bought (sometimes also on shipping).

  • Tariffs (import taxes), depending on the type of product and the value of the shipment.

  • Handling fee or courier fee: what the company that handles the customs process for you charges.

  • International shipping, which can be expensive or take weeks.

To decide, calculate the real cost in the worst case: price + VAT + handling fee (+ shipping and tariffs if there are any), and compare it with the local price, which already includes taxes, has a warranty in Mexico, and can be taken to PROFECO. If the problem you are solving gives a different VAT rate or more charges, use the data in the problem.

Traps and fraud in online shopping

Product page with the price reduced from 1,200 to 240 pesos "today only," combined with payment by upfront transfer only to an unknown seller and no card option. "today only" 1,200 240 Buy + transfer only upfront ? no card

Warning signs: an exaggerated discount, urgency ("today only"), a seller with no verifiable details, a strange web address (for example .top), transfer-only payment, a link received by message, and prices that don't match the market.

Against subscriptions: set a calendar reminder a day before the trial ends, check your account statement every month, and cancel from the app or the bank if you are charged by mistake. If you were already charged, first complain to the company and, if it doesn't respond, to your bank and to PROFECO.

Fake reviews. Be suspicious when there are hundreds of generic comments ("Great!", "Perfect") posted in almost the same month, from newly created profiles and with no real photos. Also read the 2- and 3-star reviews and look for opinions outside the store: ratings help, but they never decide on their own.

Shopping smart: tactics, platforms, and decisions

Abandoned cart. The store knows you looked at a product thanks to cookies and your account. Afterward it chases you with reminders and coupons. In your favor: leave the product in the cart and wait; often a discount arrives.

Personalized prices. Two people can see different prices depending on the device, history, repeat visits, or location. Comparing in incognito mode and from another device helps you detect it.

Delivery platforms. The platform charges the restaurant a commission on the food, charges the customer shipping and a service fee, and pays the delivery person a fixed amount. To calculate what each party is left with, subtract commissions and payments from the income.

Local store or online giant. Compare price, speed, returns, personal service, and the effect on your neighborhood (the money you spend at the local store stays closer to home). There is no single answer: it depends on the gift, the urgency, and what you value.

Digital money: cryptocurrencies and NFTs

Why 100% a month is impossible. If $\$300$ doubled every month and you reinvested, you would have $300 \times 2^{12} = \$1{,}228{,}800$ in a year. No one can sustainably pay that. Whoever pays the first investors does so with the money of the new ones: it is a Ponzi or pyramid scheme, which collapses when people stop coming in.

Red flags: a guaranteed return, with no risk and far above the market (CETES, Mexico's government bonds, for example, give modest and well-known returns); pressure to invest quickly; and promotion on social media by strangers.
