Discussing a System of Two Equations

Two drones film the Carnival of La Vega, flying along straight paths that depend on a parameter $v$ related to the wind. Depending on the value of $v$, the paths cross at a single point or run parallel (in other systems, they could even coincide completely). To discuss the system is to answer that for all values of $v$ at once, without solving it value by value.

What it means to discuss a system

Each linear equation in two unknowns is a line, so the type of system is the relative position of two lines:

Three panels: two lines that intersect at a point, two parallel lines, and two coincident lines. intersect: consistent independent parallel: inconsistent coincide: consistent dependent

The determinant of the system

Instead of comparing fractions (which fail if some denominator is zero), we use the determinant of the coefficients.

If $\Delta=0$ and the proportion also extends to the constant terms, the system is consistent and dependent. If not, it is inconsistent. For a given value of the parameter, a system never gives both results at once.

Play with the parameter $m$ in $\begin{cases} x-2y=3 \\ mx+4y=-6 \end{cases}$ and watch when the lines coincide:

Solutions in the dependent and inconsistent cases

When the system is consistent and dependent, the two equations are the same line. You solve for one unknown in terms of a free parameter $\lambda$.

To find out whether some value makes a system inconsistent, check whether in any of the cases with $\Delta=0$ the equations contradict each other. If $\Delta$ is never zero, the system is always consistent and independent and the answer is "no." A typical case is a determinant of the form $4+t^2$: it is always positive.

Discussion in real-world problems

The parameter can be a tax, the wind, or a concentration. The discussion is identical, but the conclusion is written in the language of the situation.

Two cards with the equations of the paths of two drones that depend on the parameter v, the wind. vx + 2y = 4first drone (v = wind) 2x + vy = vsecond drone

For the drones: $\Delta=v\cdot v-2\cdot2=v^2-4$, which vanishes at $v=2$ and $v=-2$. For $v\ne\pm2$ they cross at one point. At $v=2$ we get $2x+2y=4$ and $2x+2y=2$ (parallel); at $v=-2$ we get $-2x+2y=4$ and $2x-2y=-2$, which added together give $0=2$ (also parallel). In no case do they coincide. Back to the start: the drones cross at a single point if $v\ne\pm2$ and fly parallel if $v=\pm2$.

Conditions on the solution and lines

Sometimes you are asked for more than a classification: for example, that the intersection point lie on an axis. If the point is on the y-axis, substitute $x=0$ into both equations and require that they give the same $y$.

For the relative position of two lines use what you already know: $\Delta\ne0$ intersecting, $\Delta=0$ with proportional equations coincident, $\Delta=0$ with non-proportional equations parallel.
