Limits at Infinity (x → ±∞)

A corner store in Santiago makes passion fruit juice. Preparing $x$ bottles costs it a fixed $\text{RD}\$2{,}000$ plus $\text{RD}\$15$ per bottle, so the average cost per bottle is $\dfrac{2000+15x}{x}$. If it sells larger and larger quantities, what value does that cost per bottle get close to? To answer, you need to calculate limits as $x\to+\infty$ or $x\to-\infty$. We will solve it at the end of the page.

Polynomials and rational functions: the leading term rules

When $x$ becomes enormous, in a sum of powers the one with the highest degree swallows the others. For example, with $x=1{,}000$: $x^3=1{,}000{,}000{,}000$ and $x^2=1{,}000{,}000$ is one thousandth of that.

Explain which term you based your result on and why the other terms do not affect the value of the limit.

Horizontal asymptote and models

If $\lim_{x\to+\infty}f(x)=L$ (or $\lim_{x\to-\infty}f(x)=L$), with $L$ a real number, the graph gets closer and closer to the line $y=L$. That line is called a horizontal asymptote. Saying "the limit at infinity is $L$" means "in the long run, the value settles at $L$."

Graph of an increasing function that approaches the horizontal line y equals L from below as x grows. horizontal asymptote y = L x → +∞

Now we close the opening problem. The cost per bottle is $\dfrac{2000+15x}{x}$: same degree, so the limit is $\dfrac{15}{1}=15$. With huge production, the cost per bottle gets close to $\text{RD}\$15$ (the fixed $\text{RD}\$2{,}000$ is spread over so many bottles that it weighs almost nothing).

It is common for the function to contain letters and for the problem to give a condition on the limit or a point on the graph. You calculate the limit in terms of the letters, set it equal to the given value, and solve.

Hierarchy of infinities

When $x\to+\infty$, not all functions grow equally fast. There is a fixed order: in a quotient, if the numerator grows faster, the limit is $\pm\infty$; if it grows more slowly, the limit is $0$.

Conjugate with parameters and nested roots

If the limit has letters, the numerator of the conjugate will have them too. The result depends on the degree of the resulting numerator.

With nested roots, such as $\sqrt{x+\sqrt{x}}-\sqrt{x}$, the conjugate still works: the numerator is what is inside the large root minus $x$, that is, $\sqrt x$. Then divide numerator and denominator by $\sqrt x$ and use the fact that $\frac{1}{\sqrt x}\to0$.

Difference of fractions and oblique asymptote

Another form of $\infty-\infty$ is the subtraction of fractions. You make a single quotient (common denominator) and compare the degrees.

This is used to see when a graph hugs a slanted line $y=mx+n$ (oblique asymptote). The values are obtained with

$$m=\lim_{x\to+\infty}\frac{f(x)}{x},\qquad n=\lim_{x\to+\infty}\big(f(x)-mx\big).$$

For example, $\dfrac{x^2+1}{x-1}=x+1+\dfrac{2}{x-1}$: it gets close to $y=x+1$, because $\dfrac{x^2+1}{x-1}-(x+1)=\dfrac{2}{x-1}\to0$.
