Area Under a Curve

A carpenter in Santiago de los Caballeros designs a parabolic arch for the entrance of a workshop and needs to know how much sheet metal that shape will cover. Triangles, trapezoids, and circles have formulas, but a curved arch does not. What is, for example, the area of the region between the curve $f(x)=x^2$, the $OX$ axis, and the lines $x=0$ and $x=2$? The definite integral was invented to solve this problem.

Approximating the Area with Rectangles

If you don't know how to find the area of a curved shape, approximate it with shapes whose area you do know how to find. Divide the interval $[a,b]$ into narrow strips of width $\Delta x$ and, on each strip, build a rectangle whose height is the value of $f(x)$ on that strip.

Six rectangles of width Δx under an increasing curve; the sum of their areas approximates the area under the curve. Δx f(xᵢ) x

The more rectangles you use (and the narrower they are), the less is "left over" or "missing" between the staircase and the curve, and the sum of their areas gets closer to the true area.

When $f$ is constant, the rectangles coincide with the region itself: the area is exact from the very first rectangle.

An example from physics: the distance traveled is the area under the graph of velocity versus time. An electric scooter rider going at constant speed travels $\int_0^{0.5} 12\,dt$ km in half an hour.

In physics, the distance travelled by an object can be calculated as the area under the curve in a velocity against time graph. If an e-scooter moves at a constant velocity of $v(t) = 12$ km/h during the first half hour ($t = 0.5$ h), set up and calculate the definite integral that represents the distance travelled in that time.

The Definite Integral: Notation and Meaning

When the number of rectangles grows without bound ($n\to\infty$ and $\Delta x\to 0$), the sum of their areas settles on a number. That number is the definite integral of $f$ between $a$ and $b$.

When $f$ is always positive on $[a,b]$, $\displaystyle\int_a^b f(x)\,dx$ is exactly the area between the curve and the $OX$ axis. If $f$ is a simple function, you can check that the integral matches the area found by geometry.

To calculate with Barrow's rule, find an antiderivative $F$ of the integrand and evaluate $F(b)-F(a)$.

  1. Calculate the value of the area using elementary geometric formulae (area of a trapezium).

  2. Calculate the definite integral $\int_{0}^{4} (\frac{1}{2}x + 1) \, dx$ using Barrow's rule and check that both results coincide.

The Sign of the Integral: Areas Below the Axis

A Riemann sum does not distinguish "above" from "below": if $f(x)<0$, each rectangle has a negative height and enters the sum with a negative sign.

Graph of a function that crosses the OX axis at a, lies below the axis, and crosses it again at b; the region between the curve and the axis, only between a and b, is shaded and represents a negative integral. ∫f(x)dx < 0 a b

To find the area between a parabola and the $OX$ axis, first find where it crosses the axis (the roots) and use them as the limits.

A typical case: a car wash tunnel with top edge $f(x)=-x^2+4$ and supports at $x=-2$ and $x=2$. Since $f\ge 0$ on $[-2,2]$, the area is simply the integral.

Functions That Change Sign: You Have to Split the Integral

If $f$ is positive on one part of $[a,b]$ and negative on another, the integral mixes positive and negative areas and does not give the total area (the parts can cancel). Locate the points where $f$ crosses the $OX$ axis and split the integral into as many pieces as there are sign changes.

When the function has an absolute value, such as $f(x)=|x^2-1|$, write it piecewise: $x^2-1$ where $x^2-1\ge0$ and $-(x^2-1)$ where it is negative. That way the integral is split at the points where the expression inside is zero.

A useful property for exercises with data: if $\int_1^4 f=7$ and $\int_4^6 f=-3$, then $\int_1^6 f=7+(-3)=4$. Also, reversing the limits changes the sign: $\int_4^1 2f(x)\,dx=-2\cdot 7=-14$.

Area Between Curves and More Complex Regions

Many regions do not rest on the $OX$ axis, but are enclosed between two graphs, or between a curve and a line (tangent, normal, horizontal). The idea is the same: the area is the integral of "the top one minus the bottom one."

Steps for setting up a region:

  1. Draw the curves (even a rough sketch).

  2. Find the intersection points by setting the functions equal: these will be the limits of integration.

  3. Decide which function is on top in each stretch. If they cross inside the interval, split the integral.

  4. Integrate "top minus bottom" and evaluate with Barrow's rule.

Some problems ask for a parameter: set up the area as a function of $k$ and solve the equation that results from setting it equal to the given value.
