Operations with Complex Numbers in Binomial Form
Yaritza is programming a game on her cell phone where a character's position is stored as a complex number. To move it, she needs to add, multiply, and even divide those numbers. Do you have to learn brand-new rules? Almost none: you treat $a+bi$ like an ordinary binomial and remember just one extra fact, $i^2=-1$.

Equality and Evaluating Expressions
Two complex numbers are equal if and only if they have the same real part and the same imaginary part. That turns one complex equality into two real equations.
Evaluating a polynomial at a complex number means substituting and operating with the rules in this section.

Calculate the value of the polynomial $P(z) = z^2 - 4z + 5$ when evaluated at the complex number $z = 2 + i$.
Multiplication: Like a Binomial, with $i^2=-1$
Powers of $i$
The powers of $i$ repeat every four: $i^1=i$, $i^2=-1$, $i^3=-i$, $i^4=1$, and then it starts over. To calculate $i^n$, divide $n$ by 4 and keep the remainder $r$: $i^n=i^r$ (with $i^0=1$).
Multiply the following complex numbers expressed in Cartesian form and simplify the result by grouping the real part and the imaginary part: $(2 + 5i)(-3 + i)$.

In 2D video game development, the position of a character in the plane is represented by the complex number $z = 5 + 2i$. To apply an anticlockwise rotation of $90^\circ$ about the origin and, subsequently, a translation defined by the vector $(-1, 3)$, the graphics engine performs the operation $z' = z \times i + (-1 + 3i)$. Calculate the new position $z'$ of the character.

Check whether this state satisfies the normalisation condition, which requires the product of the complex number and its conjugate to be exactly one ($\psi \times \bar{\psi} = 1$).
Quadratic Equations with Complex Solutions
When the discriminant $b^2-4ac$ is negative, the quadratic formula requires the square root of a negative number. In $\mathbb{R}$ there is no solution, but in $\mathbb{C}$ there is: you take the root using $i$.

Combined Expressions, Systems, and Loci
With the previous rules you can solve long expressions (respect the order of operations: parentheses, exponents, multiplication and division, addition and subtraction), systems with complex unknowns (substitution or elimination, just like with real numbers), and real-world problems.
Exercise MEDIO-01 uses this same expression with the formula already written: you just have to operate using the rules in this section.
Sum of Powers of $1+i$
A sum $\sum (1+i)^k$ is a geometric progression with ratio $1+i$: $S=\dfrac{r^{n}-1}{r-1}$. To calculate $(1+i)^{10}$, use $(1+i)^2=2i$, so $(1+i)^{10}=(2i)^5=32i$.
Loci in the Complex Plane
Each $z=x+yi$ is a point $(x,y)$. If a condition on $z$ can be written with $x$ and $y$, you get an equation and, with it, a curve: the locus of the points that satisfy the condition.
The most common one is the circle. If you complete the square in $x^2+y^2+Dx+Ey+F=0$ you arrive at $(x-h)^2+(y-k)^2=r^2$: center $(h,k)$ and radius $r$.

Back to the beginning: moving Yaritza's character only requires adding and multiplying pairs $a+bi$ with $i^2=-1$; multiplying by $i$ rotates the point $90^\circ$ and adding a complex number translates it.
