Asymptotes of a Function
A school organizes a field trip to Samaná. The bus costs $\text{RD}\$6{,}000$ and each student also pays $\text{RD}\$50$ for lunch. With $x$ students, what each one pays is $C(x)=\dfrac{6000+50x}{x}$. If a huge number of students go, how low does the cost per person get? Does it ever drop below $\text{RD}\$50$? An asymptote answers that question, and we will answer it at the end of the page.
Basic limits and one-sided limits
An asymptote is a line that the graph gets as close to as you like. To find them you need limits, so let's review just what is necessary.

A technical inspection drone follows an approach path to an antenna whose height is given by the function $H(x) = \frac{x^2 - 9}{x - 3}$, where $x$ is the horizontal distance to the control center. Calculate the limit of the height when the drone is very close to $x = 3$ meters.
(Note: Although the function is not defined at $x=3$, study the limit by simplifying the expression).
$0/0$ indeterminate forms: factoring and the conjugate
When you substitute and get $\frac00$, you have to transform the expression. With polynomials you factor and simplify. With radicals you multiply and divide by the conjugate.

$$\lim_{x \to 0} \left( \frac{1}{x^2} - \frac{1}{x \times sen(x)} \right)$$From the result obtained, state whether the function $f(x) = \frac{sen(x) - x}{x^2 \times sen(x)}$ has a vertical asymptote at the origin.
Vertical asymptote: where the function blows up

Horizontal asymptote: the limit at infinity
For polynomials, the highest-degree term rules: $-2x^3+5x-1\to-\infty$ as $x\to+\infty$, and $x^4-100x^2\to+\infty$ as $x\to-\infty$ (an even power of a large negative number is positive).

A team of engineers is monitoring the temperature $T$ (in degrees Celsius) of a new graphics processor as a function of time $t$ (in minutes) since it was switched on. The function is given by:
$$T(t) = \frac{80t^2 + 150}{2t^2 + 3}$$Calculate the initial temperature of the processor and determine, by evaluating limits, whether the temperature stabilises in the long term. What type of asymptote does this stabilised value represent?
Studying the asymptotes of a rational function
For a rational function, the method is always the same:
-
Domain: zeros of the denominator.
-
Vertical: of those zeros, the ones that do not make the numerator zero; confirm with one-sided limits.
-
Horizontal: limit at $\pm\infty$ by comparing degrees.
-
Slant: only if there is no horizontal asymptote and the degree of the numerator is one more.

$$\lim_{x \to +\infty} \left( \frac{3x + 5}{3x - 2} \right)^{2x + 1}$$Hierarchy of infinities
When exponentials, powers, and logarithms appear, you need to know which one "wins" at infinity. For $x\to+\infty$:
$$\ln x\;\ll\;x^k\;\ll\;a^x\quad(a>1)$$That is, the exponential grows faster than any power, and the power faster than any logarithm. In a quotient, the one that grows faster decides: $\dfrac{x^5}{e^x}\to0$.

Logarithms, piecewise functions, and parameters
A logarithmic function $\ln(g(x))$ only exists where $g(x)>0$. At the finite edges of the domain, where $g\to0^+$, the logarithm tends to $-\infty$: there is a vertical asymptote there. If $g\to+\infty$ there is one as well (the logarithm goes to $+\infty$).
When the problem has parameters, you impose the condition for the asymptote and solve.

Summary
Back to the beginning: $C(x)=\dfrac{6000+50x}{x}=50+\dfrac{6000}{x}$ tends to $50$ as $x\to+\infty$. The horizontal asymptote $y=50$ says that the cost per student gets close to $\text{RD}\$50$ but always stays above it: it never drops below that.
