Rate of Change and Derivative of a Function at a Point

A new cell phone goes up in price as the months go by, a YouTube channel gains followers every day, a motoconcho speeds up on the Autopista Duarte. In every case there are two different questions: how much did it change on average over a stretch? and how fast is it changing right at this instant? The first is answered by the average rate of change; the second, by the derivative.

Average rate of change

Graph of a function with a secant line joining two points A and B, illustrating the average rate of change as its slope. A(a, f(a)) B(b, f(b)) secant: slope = TVM[a, b]

The derivative at a point

To find out what happens at one instant, we bring point $B$ closer to point $A$: the interval $[a, a+h]$ shrinks and the secant line rotates until it becomes the tangent line.

The two expressions are the same definition with $x = a + h$. Pick one and stick with it to the end.
