Irrational Equations

Before you start, make sure you know: Notable identities (Secondary Year 2 (first cycle))

Wilkin drops a stone from a bridge over the Yaque del Norte River and counts 2 seconds until he hears the splash. The formula for the fall time is $t=\sqrt{\dfrac{2h}{9.8}}$. How high is the bridge? The unknown $h$ is under a root: this is an irrational equation. We solve it at the end of the page.

The method: isolate, raise, and check

Diagram of the method: isolate the radical, square both sides, solve the resulting equation, and check the candidates in the original equation. √(2x+15) = x ( )² 2x+15 = x² x² − 2x − 15 = 0 x = 5 validx = −3 discarded

Why do we have to check? Squaring does not distinguish the sign: $(-3)^2=3^2$. So you can pick up solutions that do not satisfy the original equation.

Two radicals

If the two radicals are on different sides and there is nothing else, you can just set the radicands equal (for example, $\sqrt{3x-2}=\sqrt{x+8}$ gives $3x-2=x+8$). If there is a sum or difference of radicals, you have to square twice.

Change of variable

Sometimes the unknown appears as both $x$ and $\sqrt{x}$. Instead of isolating and squaring, it is better to let $t=\sqrt{x}$.

Diagram of the change of variable: the equation with a root becomes a quadratic in t, it is solved, and the substitution is undone with x equal to t squared. x − 7√x + 10 = 0 t = √x t² − 7t + 10 = 0 t = 2, t = 5 x = t² x = 4, x = 25

A power plant must connect to a town $B$ located on the opposite side of a straight river $4$ km wide, $10$ km downstream from the power station $A$. The cost of laying the cable underwater is $300$ million pesos per km, and on land it is $180$ million pesos per km. If the cable crosses the river in a straight line to a point $P$ located $x$ km downstream and then goes along land to $B$, the total cost in millions of pesos is $C(x) = 300\sqrt{x^2 + 16} + 180(10 - x)$.
