Types of functions

Before you start, make sure you know: Absolute value function (Secondary Year 5 (second cycle, academic track))

Yaritza sells empanadas at a corner store in Santiago. She has a fixed expense of $\text{RD}\$2{,}000$ and each empanada costs her another $\text{RD}\$5$. Her average cost per empanada is $C(x)=\dfrac{2000+5x}{x}$. What happens to that cost if she sells thousands of empanadas? And if she sells very few? The answer lies in the behavior of the graph, and each type of function has its own shortcuts and its own traps. At the end of the page we come back to this question.

The general procedure

We always follow the same order:

  1. Domain and type of function.

  2. Symmetry (even or odd).

  3. Intercepts with the axes.

  4. Asymptotes (vertical, horizontal, oblique).

  5. Monotonicity and extrema using $f'$.

  6. Curvature and inflection using $f''$.

  7. Sketch.

Recognizing the type of function before you start saves you steps. A polynomial has no asymptotes, an exponential never equals $0$, and a logarithm requires care with the domain.

Domain and symmetry

The domain is found depending on the function:

Type Restriction
Fraction denominator $\neq 0$
$\sqrt{g(x)}$ $g(x)\geq 0$
$\ln g(x)$ $g(x)>0$ (strictly)
$e^{g(x)}$ only what $g$ requires

Symmetry is checked by computing $f(-x)$:

  • Even: $f(-x)=f(x)$. The graph is symmetric about the $y$-axis.

  • Odd: $f(-x)=-f(x)$. The graph is symmetric about the origin.

  • If neither happens, there is no symmetry.

Reading information from a graph

A graph that is already drawn gives you information without calculating anything.

  • Vertical asymptotes are lines $x=a$ that the curve hugs upward or downward.

  • The value the curve approaches far to the right or far to the left is the limit at infinity.

  • Where the curve rises from left to right, $f$ is increasing.

Conversely, to sketch a function from given conditions, place each condition on the plane one at a time: first the asymptotes, then the special points, and finally the slopes and curvatures.

Rational functions in problems and with parameters

In a problem, asymptotes are interpreted. A horizontal asymptote is a long-run limiting value. A vertical one is a value of time or of the variable where something "breaks down." If there are parameters, we impose conditions (passing through a point, having a given asymptote) and solve a system.
