Operations with Fractions
At a pizza party, Marcus eats $\frac{3}{8}$ of a pizza and Sara eats $\frac{2}{8}$ of the same pizza. How much have they eaten together? And what if the slices were not the same size? In this lesson you will add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions without getting tangled up.
Adding and Subtracting with Like Denominators
Look at the bars. Every piece is an eighth, so you can just count pieces: 3 pieces plus 2 pieces is 5 pieces. Marcus and Sara ate $\frac{5}{8}$ of the pizza.
At a snack with friends, several pizzas of the same size have been bought, all cut into 8 equal slices. Marcus has eaten $\frac{3}{8}$ of a pizza. Sara has eaten…
At a snack with friends, several pizzas of the same size have been bought, all cut into 8 equal slices.
-
Marcus has eaten $\frac{3}{8}$ of a pizza.
-
Sara has eaten $\frac{2}{8}$ of a pizza.
Calculate what fraction of pizza they have eaten between the two of them and how many slices are left if only one pizza had been opened.

- a) $\frac{5}{12} + \frac{1}{12}$
- b) $\frac{11}{15} - \frac{4}{15}$
- c) $\frac{7}{9} + \frac{2}{9} - \frac{4}{9}$
Adding and Subtracting with Unlike Denominators
What if Marcus ate $\frac{1}{4}$ of a pizza and Sara ate $\frac{1}{3}$ of one? Fourths and thirds are different sizes, so you cannot count them together yet. First cut both into the same size pieces.

To prepare a tropical drink, a group of friends mixes $\frac{3}{4}$ of a liter of pineapple juice, $\frac{1}{3}$ of a liter of orange juice and $\frac{5}{6}$ of a liter of sparkling water. If after mixing everything, they drink $\frac{2}{5}$ of a liter before putting it in the fridge, what amount of drink is left in total? Express the simplified result in liters.
Multiplying Fractions and Finding a Fraction of a Quantity
An area model shows why multiplying fractions works. Take $\frac{2}{3}$ of $\frac{3}{4}$. Cut a rectangle into $4$ columns and $3$ rows. That makes $12$ equal cells.
The green overlap is $3$ columns by $2$ rows, so $6$ cells out of $12$. In numbers, the numerators multiply ($2\times 3=6$) and the denominators multiply ($3\times 4=12$).

In a chemistry laboratory, a container $A$ contains $\frac{3}{4}$ of a liter of alcohol, and a container $B$ contains $\frac{2}{3}$ of a liter of water. Half of the contents of container $A$ is transferred to container $B$. What fraction of a liter of mixture is there now in container $B$? If $\frac{1}{5}$ of the total mixture of $B$ is then spilled, how many liters are left in that container?
Dividing Fractions
Dividing asks "how many fit?" How many $\frac{1}{3}$-cup scoops fit in $2$ cups of flour?
Each cup holds $3$ scoops, so $2$ cups hold $2\cdot 3=6$ scoops. Dividing by $\frac{1}{3}$ gave the same result as multiplying by $3$.

Order of Operations with Fractions
Fraction expressions follow the same order of operations as whole numbers: grouping symbols first, then multiply and divide from left to right, then add and subtract from left to right. (Some people remember this as PEMDAS.)
Fractions can be negative too. The sign rules are the same as for integers.
When you see brackets inside parentheses (or the other way around), work from the inside out.

Word Problems: Finding the Whole

Back to the start: Marcus and Sara ate $\frac{3}{8}+\frac{2}{8}=\frac{5}{8}$ of a pizza. If one of them had eaten $\frac{1}{4}$ of a pizza and the other $\frac{1}{3}$, you would first rewrite both in twelfths: $\frac{3}{12}+\frac{4}{12}=\frac{7}{12}$.
