Ratios and Rates

Mateo is making fruit punch for the school dance: 2 cups of juice for every 3 cups of sparkling water. His cousin pours 4 cups of juice and 6 cups of sparkling water. Will the two punches taste the same? To answer, you need to compare quantities by dividing. That is what a ratio does.

What Is a Ratio?

In a 6th grade class, 12 students play basketball and 18 play soccer. The ratio of basketball players to soccer players is $12 : 18$. Simplified, that is $2 : 3$. For every 2 basketball players, there are 3 soccer players.

Dots grouped in sets of 2 and 3 show that the ratio of 12 basketball players to 18 soccer players simplifies to 2 to 3. 12 basketball18 soccer ratio 12 : 18 = 2 : 3

The blue and orange groups repeat, and each group has 2 basketball players and 3 soccer players. That repeating group is the simplified ratio.

The order is also how you find the inverse ratio. If a recipe uses 4 cups of flour for every 2 cups of water, then flour to water is $4 : 2 = 2 : 1$. Water to flour is $2 : 4 = 1 : 2$. Both are true, and they answer different questions.

Equivalent Ratios and Simplest Form

Two ratios are equivalent when they describe the same relationship. To get an equivalent ratio, multiply or divide both numbers by the same nonzero number. To write a ratio in simplest form, divide both numbers by their GCF.

For $12 : 18$, the GCF is 6, so $12 : 18 = 2 : 3$.

Rates and Unit Rates

When the two quantities in a ratio have different units, the ratio is called a rate. Examples are miles and hours, dollars and pounds, or pages and minutes.

A remote-control car goes 45 feet in 15 seconds. The rate is $\dfrac{45 \text{ ft}}{15 \text{ s}} = 3$ feet per second. That unit rate is the car's speed.

Dividing 2.5 pounds and 6.25 dollars by 2.5 gives the unit rate of 2.50 dollars per pound. 2.5 lb 1 lb $6.25 $2.50 ÷ 2.5 ÷ 2.5

Comparing Ratios

To decide which ratio is "bigger" or "better," turn each one into a decimal or a unit rate. Then the comparison is just comparing two numbers.

Aaliyah made 21 of 28 free throws. Ethan made 17 of 24. Both are shots made out of attempts:

  • Aaliyah: $21 \div 28 = 0.75$

  • Ethan: $17 \div 24 \approx 0.708$

A number line from 0.65 to 0.80 with Ethan at about 0.708 and Aaliyah at 0.75. 0.650.700.750.80 Ethan 0.708 Aaliyah 0.75

Aaliyah's point is farther right, so her shooting ratio is better. Notice that she did not make "more" shots in a fair way. What matters is the ratio, not the raw numbers.

Finding a Missing Value

There are two ways to find a missing number in a proportion. The first is to find the number you multiply or divide by (the scale factor). The second is to use cross products.

The proportion 2 over 5 equals 10 over x with crossing arrows showing the cross products 2 times x and 5 times 10. 25 = 10x 2 · x 5 · 10 = 50

The two cross products must be equal: $2x = 50$, so $x = 25$.

Cross-multiplication also tests whether two ratios are equal. If the cross products match, the ratios are equivalent. For $\frac{6}{8}$ and $\frac{9}{12}$, $6 \cdot 12 = 72$ and $8 \cdot 9 = 72$, so they are equivalent.

Ratios with Decimals and Big Numbers

Real data is rarely friendly: decimals, thousands, units. The method does not change. Write the ratio with the quantities in the right order, divide, and label the units in your answer.

A unit rate is also a multiplier. If a car uses 3.6 gallons to go 90 miles, its rate is $3.6 \div 90 = 0.04$ gallons per mile. On a 150-mile trip it uses $0.04 \times 150 = 6$ gallons.

If both quantities have the same unit, the units cancel and the ratio is just a number. A stream with 1,200 views compared with a stream with 30 views has the ratio $1{,}200 : 30 = 40 : 1$. The first has 40 times as many views.
