Quadrilaterals

A phone screen, a basketball backboard, a kite over the beach, a skate ramp seen from the side: all of them have four sides. Even a baseball diamond, with 90-foot paths between the bases, is a four-sided shape. Is it a square, a rectangle, or a rhombus? By the end of this page you will be able to answer that and many more questions about quadrilaterals.

Quadrilaterals and Their Angles

Quadrilateral ABCD split by diagonal AC into two triangles, each with angle sum 180 degrees. AB CD 180° 180° 2 × 180° = 360°

Part b of this exercise uses ideas from the next section, so come back to it after you read that one.

Parallelograms

Four kinds of parallelograms: square, rectangle, rhombus, and a slanted parallelogram. square rectangle rhombus parallelogram

Two angles are supplementary when they add up to $180^\circ$. This word is the key to the angles of a parallelogram.

Trapezoids

An isosceles trapezoid with angles x and 180 minus x on one leg, and a right trapezoid with two right angles. x 180° − x isosceles trapezoid right trapezoid

Because the two bases are parallel, each leg works like the line crossing two parallel lines. The two angles at the ends of a leg are same-side interior angles, so they add to $180^\circ$.

One problem describes a kite as a "symmetric trapezoid". Be careful: a kite has no parallel sides, so it is not a trapezoid at all. It is just a kite, and it is different from an isosceles trapezoid, which has one pair of parallel sides.

The Quadrilateral Family Tree

Quadrilaterals fit into families. A shape can belong to more than one at the same time.
