Operations with Integers

A scuba diver is at $-15$ feet, which means 15 feet below the surface. She swims down 12 more feet. How deep is she now? Emma's bank account has the same kind of problem: deposits go up, fees go down, and she wants to know what is left. To keep track of all of this without getting lost, you need to know how to operate with integers.

Adding and Subtracting Integers

Think of the number line as a street. Adding a positive number means walking to the right. Adding a negative number means walking to the left. In the picture, you start at $-4$ and add $+9$. You walk 4 steps to reach $0$ and 5 more steps to land on $+5$.

Number line showing -4 + 9 = 5: a jump of 9 units from -4 to 5 that crosses zero. +9 −40+5 +4+5

Try it yourself: drag the point along the number line and watch how its position changes.

Multiplying and Dividing Integers

Multiplying is repeated addition: $3 \cdot (-4)$ means $(-4) + (-4) + (-4) = -12$. A positive times a negative gives a negative. When both numbers are negative, there is a "double flip" that points back toward the positives.

Sign rules for multiplying and dividing integers: same signs give a positive result, different signs give a negative result. (+) · (+) = (+) (−) · (−) = (+) (+) · (−) = (−) (−) · (+) = (−) same signs → positive result different signs → negative result (the same rule works for dividing)

Some problems write division with a colon, like $24 : (-6)$. It means $24 \div (-6)$.

Opposites and Absolute Value

The opposite of a number is the number on the other side of $0$ at the same distance. The opposite of $-6$ is $6$, and the opposite of $6$ is $-6$.

The absolute value of a number is its distance from $0$, so it is never negative. We write $|-6| = 6$ and $|6| = 6$.

If the helicopter is at a height of $+120$ feet and the submarine is at a depth of $-85$ feet:

  1. a) What is the total vertical distance separating them?
  2. b) If the submarine ascends $25$ feet and the helicopter descends $30$ feet, what will be the new distance between them? Express this using operations with integers.

Order of Operations

When an expression mixes addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and parentheses, everyone must follow the same order, or we would get different answers. The order is the same one you learned for whole numbers.

Staircase diagram of the order of operations: grouping first, then exponents and roots, then multiplying and dividing, then adding and subtracting. 1. Grouping: ( ) and [ ] 2. Exponents and square roots 3. Multiply and divide, left to right 4. Add and subtract, left to right

You may know this as PEMDAS. Remember that multiplication and division share the same level, and so do addition and subtraction. Within a level, go left to right.

Parentheses can also describe a sentence. "The sum of the first two numbers, multiplied by the third" is $(a + b) \cdot c$. For the trio $(3, -7, 2)$ that is $(3 + (-7)) \cdot 2 = (-4) \cdot 2 = -8$.

Brackets, Powers, and Roots

Square brackets $[\ ]$ work like parentheses. When one group sits inside another, work from the innermost group outward. Powers and square roots come right after the groups and before multiplying.

Also, $\sqrt{25} = 5$. The square root symbol means the positive root.

The Distributive Property

When the same factor appears in two products that are added or subtracted, you can pull it out front:

$$a \cdot b + a \cdot c = a \cdot (b + c)$$

This is the distributive property read backward. It often saves a lot of work, because the sum inside the parentheses is easy.

Factoring out -6 from (-6)·15 + (-6)·(-5) gives (-6)·(15 + (-5)) = (-6)·10 = -60. (−6) · 15 + (−6) · (−5) factor out the common −6 (−6) · (15 + (−5)) (−6) · 10 = −60

Finding a Missing Integer

Sometimes one number in an equation is hidden. To find it, undo each operation using the inverse operation. Addition and subtraction undo each other, and so do multiplication and division.

Undoing a multiplication: x times 4 equals -20, so dividing -20 by 4 gives x = -5. x −20 × 4 → ← ÷ 4 (undo)

When the unknown is inside an absolute value, remember that two numbers can have the same absolute value.

For a puzzle with a product of two numbers (like a number wall), if you know the product and one factor, divide the product by the factor to get the other one.

Word Problems with Integers

Integers describe situations with two directions: up and down, gain and loss, above and below zero. To solve a word problem, follow these steps:

  1. Choose which direction is positive and which is negative.

  2. Write each event as an integer, in order.

  3. Write one expression and evaluate it with the order of operations.

  4. Answer in a sentence with the correct units.

You can also work backward. Given an expression like $50 + 3 \cdot (-10)$, you can invent a story: "You have \$50 and buy 3 snacks that cost \$10 each." Each part of the expression must match something that happens in your story.
