The Set of Integers

On a January morning in Chicago, the thermometer reads $-4\ ^\circ\text{F}$. You owe your friend $\$15$ for pizza. A research submarine is hovering $85$ feet below the surface. None of these can be written with just $0, 1, 2, 3, \ldots$ You need integers, numbers that can also say "below zero."

What Is an Integer?

A positive number is often written with a plus sign ($+5$), but $+5$ and $5$ are the same number.

Many situations come in opposite pairs. Zero is the dividing line between them.

Positive ($+$) Negative ($-$)
gain, earn, deposit lose, owe, withdraw
above sea level, floor 3 below sea level, basement 2
above $0\ ^\circ\text{F}$ below $0\ ^\circ\text{F}$
go up, forward, right go down, backward, left
Nested sets: the natural numbers 1, 2, 3 and so on sit inside the whole numbers, which add 0, and both sit inside the integers, which also contain the negative numbers. ℤ −1, −2, −3… 0 ℕ 1, 2, 3… ℕ: natural numbers whole numbers: ℕ and 0 ℤ: integers

The numbers $1, 2, 3, \ldots$ are the natural numbers, written $\mathbb{N}$ (also called the counting numbers). Add $0$ and you get the whole numbers: $0, 1, 2, 3, \ldots$ Every natural number and every whole number is an integer, but not every integer is a whole number. The negative integers are not whole numbers and not natural numbers.

To turn a situation into an integer, decide which direction is positive. Then use the size of the change as the number and the direction as the sign. Losing $\$8$ is $-8$, and finding $\$8$ is $+8$.

The Number Line

A number line puts integers in order. Positive numbers go to the right of $0$ and negative numbers go to the left. A vertical number line works the same way: up is positive and down is negative.

Opposites and Absolute Value

Opposites always have the same absolute value. The opposite of $0$ is $0$.

Dates are integers too. We write years AD as positive and years BC as negative, so $300$ BC is $-300$ and AD $1776$ is $+1776$. In this section's problems, $0$ stands for the dividing point of the timeline.

Solving Number Clues

Some problems give clues about a number instead of naming it. Turn each clue into a picture on the number line.

  • "$|x| = 7$" means $x$ is $7$ units from $0$, so $x = 7$ or $x = -7$.

  • "$|x| < 4$" means $x$ is less than $4$ units from $0$, so $x$ is $-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2$, or $3$.

  • "The opposite of $x$ is negative" means $x$ itself is positive.

Open circles show numbers that are not included (the clue says "less than," not "less than or equal to"). A strategy that works well:

  1. List every integer that fits the first clue.

  2. Cross out the ones that break the next clue.

  3. Test the remaining candidates in any clue that is hard to picture, such as one that adds $x$ and $|x|$.

Moving Along the Number Line

Many problems tell a story of ups and downs. Keep a running position: start where the story starts and update after each move.

  • Up, forward, right, gain: add a positive amount.

  • Down, backward, left, loss: subtract, which moves you toward smaller numbers.

You can also group the moves. Add all the "up" amounts, add all the "down" amounts, and subtract. This gives the net change.

Some stories use words that change the next move:

  • "Twice as long, in the opposite direction" means multiply the size by $2$ and switch the sign.

  • "The opposite of the square you are on" means jump to the number on the other side of $0$.

  • "Double the absolute value of $-3$" means $2 \times 3 = 6$ units, in whatever direction the story says.

Distance and the Middle Point

The distance between two integers is the number of units between them on the number line.

  • On opposite sides of $0$, add the absolute values: the distance between $-12$ and $20$ is $12 + 20 = 32$.

  • On the same side of $0$, subtract the smaller absolute value from the greater: the distance between $-18$ and $-30$ is $30 - 18 = 12$.

A clue like "$b$ is $3$ units from $a$" gives two possible numbers: $3$ to the right or $3$ to the left. A second clue such as "$b < a$" picks the left one.
