Monomials

In a video game you collect red gems worth $x$ points each. On level 1 you earn $5x$ points, on level 2 you earn $8x$, and on level 3 you lose $3x$. How many points do you have in all? To find out, you need to work with monomials.

What is a monomial?

The monomial -5x²y with its coefficient -5, its variable part x²y, and its degree 3, found by adding the exponents 2 and 1. −5 x²y coefficient variable part degree = 2 + 1 = 3 (y has exponent 1, even though you don't see it)

Here are a few more, so you can see the pattern:

Monomial Coefficient Variable part Degree
$6a^3$ $6$ $a^3$ $3$
$\tfrac{1}{4}xy^2$ $\tfrac{1}{4}$ $xy^2$ $3$
$-m$ $-1$ $m$ $1$
$9$ $9$ none $0$

Not everything with letters is a monomial. $\dfrac{4}{x}$ is not, because the variable is in the denominator. $\sqrt{x}$ is not, because its exponent is not a whole number. $2 + a$ is not, because it has two terms joined by a $+$.

Area and surface area problems

Many hard problems are geometry in disguise. Two facts you need:

  • Area of a rectangle: base $\times$ height. Area of a triangle: $\tfrac{1}{2} \times$ base $\times$ height.

  • A cube with edge $a$ has square faces, each with area $a \cdot a = a^2$.

A rectangle with base 8a and height 5b squared, with a triangle of base 4a and height b squared cut out of its bottom (not to scale). A dashed line marks the triangle's height. 8a 5b² b² 4a painted = rectangle − triangle

For stacked cubes, count faces one kind at a time. Every cube has 6 faces, but a face that touches another cube or the floor is hidden, so it is never counted as visible. Then read what the problem says about which faces are painted.

Here is a column of 3 cubes, each with edge $a$:

A column of three cubes seen from the front, each with edge a. Each cube has a gold top face; the side faces are silver. a top 1 top 2 top 3 each face has area a · a = a² thick line = gold top face
  • Gold (top faces). The problem says the top face of every cube is painted gold, so each cube adds one face of area $a^2$. Three floors give $3a^2$, and a tower of $n$ floors has $n$ cubes, so the gold area is $n \cdot a^2 = na^2$.

  • Silver (side faces). Each cube has 4 side faces, and none of them touches another cube in a column, so all are visible: $3 \cdot 4 = 12$ faces, which is $12a^2$.

  • Hidden faces. The faces where one cube touches the next one, and the face on the floor, are left out of the silver count.

If two cubes sit side by side, the two faces where they touch are hidden: $4 + 4 - 2 = 6$ visible side faces, which is $6a^2$.

Always look at the picture in the exercise and count which faces you can really see.
