Circles: Circumference and Area
You order a 12-inch pizza. How long is the crust all the way around? And how much cheese does it take to cover the top? Those are two different questions, and they need two different formulas. By the end of this page you will answer both.
Parts of a Circle
Every point on a circle is the same distance from one fixed point, the center. The curved edge is the circle itself, and the circumference is the distance around that edge. The space inside is the region whose area we measure.
The radius is half the diameter, so $r = \dfrac{d}{2}$. All radii of one circle have the same length.

Regions of a Circle
A chord or a pair of radii cuts the inside of a circle into named regions. Two circles with the same center but different radii are called concentric.

Points and Lines Compared with a Circle
Compare the distance from the center with the radius.

The logo of a new sportswear brand consists of a circumference of radius $r = 5\text{ cm}$ crossed by a straight line. If the line passes at a distance of $3\text{ cm}$ from the center of the circumference, draw the diagram and answer:
- a) What is the relative position of the line with respect to the circumference?
- b) If we draw another line that passes exactly $5\text{ cm}$ from the center, what would that line be called?
- c) What is the name of the segment of the first line that lies inside the circumference?
Circumference
Take a string, wrap it once around a can, and then compare it with the width of the can (its diameter). The string is always a little more than $3$ diameters long, no matter how big the can is.
That "a little more" is about $0.14$ of a diameter. The exact number $3.14159\ldots$ is called $\pi$ (pi). For homework we use $\pi \approx 3.14$.
When the trip is given in miles, convert it to feet first. In real life, $1$ mi $= 5{,}280$ ft.

A mountain bike wheel has a total radius of $35\text{ in}$. If the cyclist travels a distance of $1,1\text{ kilometers}$ in a straight line:
- a) How many feet does the bicycle travel in a single turn of the wheel?
- b) How many full turns will the wheel have made at the end of the journey?
(Fact: $1\text{ mi} = 1000\text{ ft}$; consider $\pi \approx 3,14$).
Area of a Circle
The area is the number of unit squares that fit inside. A square whose side is the radius has area $r^2$. It takes a bit more than $3$ of those squares to cover the circle: exactly $\pi$ of them.
Back to the start: the crust of the $12$-inch pizza is its circumference, $C = \pi \cdot 12 \approx 37.68$ in. The cheese covers its area, $113.04$ in².

A pizzeria has two offers for its artisan pizzas:
-
Offer A: A family pizza of $40\text{ cm}$ diameter.

Combined Shapes
To find the area of a shape made from circles and other figures, add or subtract simple areas. For a ring, subtract the small circle from the big one.

In the design of a new logo for a technology company, a square of side $L = 10 \text{ cm}$ has been drawn. At each of its vertices, an arc of a circle has been drawn with a radius equal to half the side of the square ($5 \text{ cm}$), so that the four arcs touch at the midpoints of the sides. Calculate the area of the shaded region left in the center of the square (the area that does not belong to any of the four circular sectors).
Arcs and Sectors
A full turn around the center is $360^\circ$. A sector with central angle $n^\circ$ is the fraction $\dfrac{n}{360}$ of the whole circle, so its arc and its area are the same fraction of the circumference and of the area.

- b) The total area of grass watered by the sprinkler.
(Use $\pi \approx 3,14$ and round to two decimal places).

If we want to gold-plate only the top part of the bracelet (a sector of the circular ring that covers an angle of $120^\circ$), what is the surface area that will be gold-plated? Round the result to two decimal places.
Central and Inscribed Angles
A central angle has its vertex at the center. An inscribed angle has its vertex on the circle. When both open to the same arc, the inscribed angle is half as big.

- a) Calculate the size of the central angle that subtends that same arc.
- b) If the central angle were $110^\circ$, what would be the size of any inscribed angle subtending the same arc?
Chords and the Pythagorean Theorem
A perpendicular line from the center to a chord cuts that chord exactly in half. That makes a right triangle with the radius as its longest side (the hypotenuse).

An engineer is designing a mechanical part consisting of a metal disc of radius $R = 12 \text{ cm}$. To lighten the part, they must make a straight cut (a chord) that is at an exact distance of $7,2 \text{ cm}$ from the center of the disc. Using the Pythagorean theorem, determine what the total length of this cut (the chord) will be in order to program the cutting machine.
