Integers, Absolute Value, and the Coordinate Plane
The thermometer outside reads $-4\,^\circ\text{F}$. You owe your friend $\$15$. A scuba diver is 20 feet below the surface. Counting numbers (1, 2, 3, ...) can't describe any of these. You need integers, which add the negative numbers for everything that falls "below zero."
Positive, negative, and zero
Many situations come in opposite pairs: above or below sea level, a deposit or a withdrawal, a gain or a loss, before or after an event. Integers give each side of the pair its own sign.
| Situation | Integer |
|---|---|
| A deposit of $\$25$ | $+25$ |
| Owing a friend $\$10$ | $-10$ |
| A team is ahead by 5 points | $+5$ |
| Floor 2 below ground in a parking garage | $-2$ |
In everyday life we use integers to express opposite situations. Match an integer (positive or negative) to each of the following situations: a) The street thermometer…

- a) The street thermometer reads $4$ degrees below zero.
- b) You owe $\$15$ to a friend.
- c) A diver is at a depth of $20$ feet.
- d) An airplane is flying at an altitude of $8.500$ feet.
- e) You have won $50$ points in a level of your favorite video game.
- f) The shopping center parking lot is on the third basement level.
Reading the number line
A number line puts integers in order. Negative numbers are on the left of $0$, positive numbers on the right, and the marks are equally spaced. Numbers get greater as you move right and less as you move left.
To read a point, start at $0$ and count marks. $A$ is 4 marks to the left of $0$, so $A = -4$. $C$ is 3 marks to the right, so $C = 3$.
Distance and halfway points
The distance between two points is how many units you travel to get from one to the other. Distance is never negative.
If both points are on the same side of $0$, subtract instead. For example, $-9$ and $-2$ are $9 - 2 = 7$ units apart. If the distance is odd, the halfway point falls between two integers.
Look at the following number line and identify which integer corresponds to each of the points marked with a letter ($A$, $B$, $C$ and $D$).

Look at the following number line where some integers have been replaced by letters. Knowing that the distance between each mark is 2 units:

Look at the following number line where two points, $A$ and $B$, have been marked. Knowing that the distance between point $A$ and point $B$ is $15$ units and that point $A$ corresponds to the integer $-6$:
- a) Determine which integer point $B$ represents if it is located to the right of $A$.
- b) Calculate the value of $|A| + |B|$.
- c) If we place a new point $C$ exactly in the middle of the line segment joining $A$ and $B$, what integer would $C$ represent?
Absolute value and opposites
Some problems write "the opposite of $a$" as $op(a)$. It is the same as $-a$, so $op(-9)$ means the same thing as $-(-9)$.
Why does $-(-9) = 9$? The minus sign in front means "take the opposite." The opposite of $-9$ is $9$. If you take the opposite twice, you land back where you started.
Simplifying signs
Work from the inside out. Find the value inside first, then apply the outer sign.

On the number line, numbers increase from left to right. So the number farther to the right is greater.
The symbols $<$ and $>$ always open toward the greater number. So $-8 < -3$ and $-3 > -8$ say the same thing.
To order a list, picture the numbers on the number line, then read from left to right.

True or false? Examples and counterexamples
Some problems ask you to decide whether a statement about integers is true. To show a statement is true, you must explain why it works for every integer, not just one. To show it is false, one counterexample is enough: a single example where the statement fails.
Drag the points to test a claim by looking at positions and distances from $0$.

Solving number clues
Some problems give clues about a mystery integer. Turn each clue into a position on the number line, then keep only the numbers that satisfy every clue.
First, simplify clues like "the opposite of $-1$" into a plain number. The clue "$|x| = 4$" gives two numbers, $x = 4$ or $x = -4$, because both are 4 units from $0$.
Clues with $<$ and $>$ work the same way. "$|x| < 5$" means $x$ is less than 5 units from $0$, so $x$ can be $-4, -3, \ldots, 3, 4$. Also, "the opposite of $x$ is positive" means $x$ is negative.

Using integers for changes
Integers also describe changes. A gain or a rise is positive, and a loss or a fall is negative. To find where you end up, start at the original number and move on the number line: right for a positive change, left for a negative change.

Writing one expression for several changes
When there are many changes, write them all in one expression: start value, then each change with its sign. Gains and deposits are positive. Losses, charges, and withdrawals are negative. Follow the order of operations, so multiplication comes before adding and subtracting.

A volcanic inspection drone takes off from a platform located at $120$ feet above sea level. During its mission, it makes the following consecutive movements:
-
It descends $150$ feet to enter a crevice.
-
It ascends $85$ feet to avoid a gust of wind.
-
It descends again $40$ feet to take thermal samples.

The balance of a bank account at the beginning of the month was $\$-245$. During the month the following transactions occur:
-
Three equal deposits from a second-hand sales platform worth $\$40$ each.
-
A charge for the electricity bill that is double the absolute value of the initial balance.

Write a single expression with integers that represents all these transactions and calculate the final balance of the account. Is the account still in the red?
Years BC and AD
A timeline is a number line for years. We treat years AD as positive and years BC as negative. So 100 BC is $-100$, and AD 15 is $+15$. Moving forward in time is moving right: adding years.

An archaeologist is studying an ancient dynasty. He knows that the first king of the dynasty was born in the year $42$ BC and died at $65$ years of age. His son, the heir, was born when the father was $28$ years old and reigned for $35$ years after his father's death.
- a) Use integers to represent the years of birth and death of both figures.
- b) In what year did the son's reign end? Express the result in chronological format (BC or AD).
The coordinate plane
Integers can also locate points on a flat map. The coordinate plane has a horizontal number line (the x-axis) and a vertical number line (the y-axis). They cross at the origin, $(0, 0)$. Every point is described by an ordered pair $(x, y)$: first how far left or right, then how far up or down.
To move a point, change one coordinate. Moving right adds to $x$, moving left subtracts from $x$. Moving up adds to $y$, moving down subtracts from $y$.
Back to the start: A temperature of $-4\,^\circ\text{F}$, a debt of $\$15$ (written $-15$), and a diver 20 feet down (written $-20$) are all integers below a starting point: $0\,^\circ\text{F}$, a zero balance, or the water's surface.
