Similarity concepts

When you zoom in on a photo on your phone, the image gets bigger but it doesn't get distorted: it still looks the same, only larger. How does a Dublin architect draw a whole school on one sheet of paper, or the Aviva Stadium as a model on a desk? This idea has a mathematical name: similarity. You will use it to read plans, maps, scale models and enlarged photos, and at the end we will answer the question of how big a model needs to be.

What similarity is

Two similar rectangles measuring 3 by 4.5 and 6 by 9, which keep the same shape with a scale factor of 2. 3 × 4.5 6 × 9 same shape
  • $3$ and $6$: ratio $2$. $\quad$ $4.5$ and $9$: ratio $2$. Both ratios are the same, so they are similar.

  • In similar figures the corresponding angles are equal. If Lucas doubles every side of a triangle with angles $40^\circ$, $60^\circ$ and $80^\circ$, the new triangle still has angles $40^\circ$, $60^\circ$ and $80^\circ$.

  • If a figure is rotated or flipped over (reflected), it is still similar: all that matters is the shape, not the position.

Sara has two photographs of her dog. The first one is $10 \text{ cm}$ wide and $15 \text{ cm}$ tall. The second one is an enlargement that is $20 \text{ cm}$ wide and $30 \text{ cm}$ tall. Are these two photographs similar figures? Justify your answer by checking whether the dimensions are proportional.

An illustrator is designing two versions of the same rectangular logo. The original logo has dimensions of $12\text{ cm}$ in length and $8\text{ cm}$ in width. If they want to create an enlarged version that is similar and whose length measures $30\text{ cm}$:

  1. Calculate the scale factor $k$ of the enlargement.

  2. Determine the width of the new logo.

  3. If the perimetre of the small logo is $40\text{ cm}$, what will the perimetre of the large one be? Use the relationship between the perimetres of similar figures to check your answer.

Scales: plans and maps

A scale is, in fact, a scale factor. If a plan is drawn to a scale of $1:50$, every centimetre on the drawing represents $50$ centimetres in real life: $k = \frac{1}{50}$. This is how a scale drawing of a classroom or a map of the Wicklow Mountains is made.

On his phone screen, Cian sees a map to a certain scale. If the scale factor between the map on the screen and reality is $k = \frac{1}{5000}$, state whether the following statements are true or false:

  • a) The map is a reduction of reality.

  • b) $1 \text{ cm}$ on the map represents $5000 \text{ cm}$ in reality.

  • c) The angles between streets change on the map so that they fit on the screen.

Similar triangles and shadows

Triangles are the easiest shapes to test for similarity, and they let you find heights from shadows.

For right-angled triangles you also need Pythagoras' Theorem: the square of the hypotenuse equals the sum of the squares of the other two sides, $a^2 = b^2 + c^2$. For example, if the other two sides are $9$ and $12$, the hypotenuse is $\sqrt{81 + 144} = 15$. It also works backwards: if you know the hypotenuse (such as the diagonal of a rectangle) and the ratio of the other two sides, you can find them.

A line parallel to one side of a triangle makes a smaller triangle with equal angles, so it is similar to the original.

Two intersecting lines cut by parallel lines, forming similar triangles. A B C D E [DE] parallel to [BC] |AD| = 4 |DB| = 2 |AE| = 6
