Direct proportion

Before you start, make sure you know: Ratio (1st Year, Junior Cycle)
Before you start, make sure you know: Linear equations (1st Year, Junior Cycle)

The more tickets you buy for a Leinster match at the Aviva, the more money you pay. The more white paint you mix, the more tint you need to keep the same shade. In both cases, when you multiply one quantity by a number, the other is multiplied by the same number: this is direct proportion.

What is direct proportion?

In a shop in Galway that prints club jerseys, 3 printed T-shirts cost €18. Check that the price ÷ T-shirts quotient is always the same:

T-shirts 3 6 9 15
Price (€) 18 36 54 90

The quotient is always $18 \div 3 = 6$, so $k = 6$ (€ per T-shirt).

Seán is buying oranges at his neighbourhood market. He knows that $3\text{ kg}$ of oranges cost $€4.20$ and needs to find out how much $5\text{ kg}$ will cost. To solve this, Seán reasons as follows: “Since $5$ is equal to $3 + 2$, I just need to add $€2$ to the price of $€4.20$, so I will pay $€6.20$”. Identify the mistake in Seán's reasoning, explain why his method does not respect the definition of direct proportionality, and calculate the correct price by first obtaining the constant of direct proportionality $k$ (price per kilogram).

Percentages of a quantity

A percentage is a direct proportion out of 100. To find a percentage of a quantity, write the percentage as a decimal and multiply: $25\%$ of $120 = 0.25 \times 120 = 30$. So '25% more than $A$' means $A + 0.25A = 1.25A$.
