Simultaneous equations

Before you start, make sure you know: Linear equations (1st Year, Junior Cycle)

In a shop near your school, Aoife buys two pens and three rubbers for €4; Seán buys two pens and one rubber for €2. How much does each item cost? There are two unknowns (the pen and the rubber) and two clues. A single equation is not enough: you need to solve them at the same time. That is a pair of simultaneous equations.

What simultaneous equations are

To check a solution, substitute into both equations, not just one. If $x = 0.5$ and $y = 1$: $2 \cdot 0.5 + 3 \cdot 1 = 4$ ✓ and $2 \cdot 0.5 + 1 = 2$ ✓.

Graphical meaning

Each equation of this kind, with two unknowns, is a line (all its points are solutions). The solution of the system is the point where the two lines intersect. Move the lines and observe:

Three cases for the relative position of two lines: intersecting with one solution, parallel with no solution and coincident with infinitely many solutions. intersect:one solution parallel:none coincide:infinitely many

In a role-playing video game, the experience points of two skills, Strength ($x$) and Magic ($y$), must satisfy the conditions of the following system of equations:

$$\begin{cases} x + y = 15 \\ 2x - y = 9 \end{cases}$$

Check, by carrying out the necessary operations, which of these pairs of values is the correct solution to the system for the character to level up:

  1. a) $x = 10, y = 5$
  2. b) $x = 8, y = 7$

"In a café, we were charged $5$ € for two soft drinks ($x$) and a bag of crisps ($y$). If we buy one soft drink and one bag of crisps, the price is $3$ €."

(It is not necessary to solve it, just set up the system).

We want to design a system of two linear equations with two unknowns whose unique solution is exactly the pair $(x = 4, \; y = -2)$.

  1. a) Write a first equation of the form $ax + by = c$ (with $a$ and $b$ non-zero integers) that holds for these values. Show the numerical verification of how you obtain the constant term $c$.
  2. b) Come up with a second linear equation that also admits this solution, but making sure that it is not equivalent (proportional) to the first one to prevent the lines from being coincident.
  3. c) Solve your resulting system to prove that, indeed, the only shared solution is $(4, -2)$.

Substitution method

You solve for one unknown in one equation and substitute it into the other. It works especially well when an unknown is already isolated or has coefficient $1$. Equating is a special case of substitution: see the end of this section.

On a small farm there is a total of $12$ animals, consisting of chickens ($x$) and rabbits ($y$). If we count all their legs, there is a total of $34$ legs. The system of equations describing this situation is:

Solve the system using whichever method you prefer to find out how many chickens and how many rabbits there are on the farm.

Look at the following figure made up of two rectangles with different properties. Rectangle A has a perimetre of $22\text{ cm}$. Rectangle B is such that its base is twice that of rectangle A and its height is three times that of rectangle A, having a total perimetre of $52\text{ cm}$.

A x y P = 22 cm B 2x 3y P = 52 cm

Calculate the dimensions $x$ (base) and $y$ (height) of rectangle A by setting up and solving a system using the equating method.

Equating: substitution when the same unknown is isolated twice

If you solve for the same unknown in both equations, you can substitute one expression for the other, which means equating them.

Elimination method

You multiply the equations by suitable numbers so that, when you add (or subtract) them, one of the unknowns disappears.

Solving a system by elimination, adding two equations with opposite coefficients in y to eliminate that unknown. 4x+ y= 13 x− y= 2 + 5x 0= 15 x = 3 +y and −y are opposites: when added, the y disappears Then: 4·3 + y = 13 → y = 1

Look closely at the coefficients of the unknowns in the following system of linear equations:

$$\begin{cases} 3x + y = 10 \\ 5x - 2y = 13 \end{cases}$$
  1. a) If you had to choose between the substitution, elimination, and equating methods, which one would you consider most direct and convenient to solve this system? Justify your answer by looking at the characteristics of the coefficients.
  2. b) Solve the system using the method you defended in the previous section and formally check that the pair $(x, y)$ obtained satisfies both equations at the same time.

Tidying up first

Sometimes the equations come with brackets or fractions. Expand brackets and collect like terms first; for fractions, multiply every term by the lowest common multiple of the denominators. Then write each equation as $ax + by = c$.

Solve the following system of linear equations by first simplifying both expressions. To find the final solution, use the double elimination method (eliminating one unknown and then the other):

$$ \begin{cases} \dfrac{2(x-1)}{3} - \dfrac{y+2}{6} = -1 \\ \\ \dfrac{x+y}{2} + \dfrac{x-y}{3} = \dfrac{7}{6} \end{cases} $$

How many solutions?

Parallel lines have the same slope but different y-intercepts: no solution. If you try to solve, the unknowns vanish and you get a false statement such as $0 = 5$ (inconsistent). Coincident lines give a true statement such as $0 = 0$ (infinitely many solutions). A system with one solution is consistent with a unique solution.

Consider the following system of linear equations, in which an unknown parameter $k$ appears:

$$\begin{cases} 2x - 5y = 4 \\ 6x + k \times y = 7 \end{cases}$$
  1. a) Without solving the system by trial and error, deduce with reasoning what value $k$ must take so that the two lines representing the system geometrically are parallel and, therefore, the system has no solution (it is an inconsistent system).
  2. b) A student claims: "If we replace the constant term $7$ with another suitable number, keeping the value of $k$ you just found, the system would then have infinitely many solutions." Determine whether this statement is true or false, explaining what geometric and algebraic condition the two equations must satisfy for this to happen, and what number should exactly replace $7$.
  3. c) If the value $k = 1$ is assigned, how many solutions will the system have? Justify your answer looking exclusively at the proportionality ratio between the coefficients of the unknowns, without needing to calculate the explicit solution.

Setting up problems with simultaneous equations

  1. Choose two unknowns and write down what each one means ($x$ = price of the pen, $y$ = price of the rubber).

  2. Turn each piece of information in the problem into a different equation.

  3. Solve using whichever method suits you best and check against the problem.

Outline of the four steps for solving a problem with systems: identify the unknowns, set up the equations, solve the system and check the solution. 15 in total x = 8 (Strength)y = 7 (Magic) x + y = 152x − y = 9

In a strategy video game, to unlock an upgrade you need to collect blue gems and red gems. We know that three times the number of blue gems plus twice the number of red gems gives a total of 34 energy. Furthermore, the difference between the number of blue and red gems is only 3.

  1. a) Set up a system of equations to find out how many gems of each type you need.
