Concept
At a hurling match in Croke Park, Aoife says her team scored $\frac{3}{5}$ of all the points in the game. In First Year you learnt what a fraction is. Now it is time to put it in its proper place: inside a new set, $\mathbb{Q}$, which also includes negative numbers, and to learn how to work with its negative and its reciprocal. We will come back to Aoife's fraction at the end.
Fractions, integers and natural numbers: the set $\mathbb{Q}$
Every integer is rational: $5 = \frac{5}{1}$, $-2 = \frac{-4}{2}$. And any fraction whose numerator is a multiple of its denominator is really an integer in disguise: $\frac{15}{3} = 5$.
Not every number is rational. Numbers such as $\sqrt{2}$ and $\pi$ cannot be written as a fraction of two integers. They are called irrational numbers, the set $\mathbb{R}\backslash\mathbb{Q}$, and they sit outside $\mathbb{Q}$.
Numerator, denominator, proper and improper fractions
In $\frac{3}{8}$ the denominator (8) says into how many equal parts the whole is divided. The numerator (3) says how many of those parts we take. A fraction is proper if the numerator is smaller than the denominator (it is less than 1), and improper if the numerator is bigger than or equal to the denominator ($\frac{5}{5} = 1$ and $\frac{9}{4}$ are not less than 1).

To simplify the fraction $\frac{420}{1260}$ to its irreducible form, two classmates suggest different strategies:
-
Aoife suggests: "I'm going to successively divide the numerator and denominator using simple divisibility rules (by 2, by 3, by 5...) until I can't do it anymore."
-
Cian suggests: "I prefer to break down both numbers into prime factors, calculate the $\text{gcd}(420, 1260)$, and do a single division."
- a) Apply both methods step by step in your notebook to obtain the irreducible fraction.
- b) Critically evaluate both procedures: what advantages and disadvantages does each method have in this case with three- and four-digit numbers? Why does calculating the $\text{gcd}$ mathematically guarantee that the resulting fraction cannot be simplified any further?

In a mountain stage of the Rás Tailteann, the organizers place a special sprint banner at the kilometer mark that corresponds exactly to $\frac{47}{6}$ of a reference climb.

Find a positive, irreducible fraction $\frac{a}{b}$ that simultaneously satisfies these three conditions:
-
Its expression as a mixed number has 3 as its whole-number part (that is, $\frac{a}{b} = 3 + \frac{r}{b}$, with $0 < r < b$).
-
The reciprocal of the remaining proper fraction $\frac{r}{b}$ is an exact integer.
-
The product of the numerator and the denominator, $a \times b$, is strictly greater than 50 and less than 80.
Deduce step by step which value or values $a$ and $b$ can take, reasoning why the condition that the initial fraction is irreducible forces $r = 1$, and ruling out with mathematical arguments any options that do not satisfy all the constraints.
Adding and subtracting fractions, what remains, absolute value and midpoints
To add or subtract fractions, write them over a common denominator, then add or subtract the numerators. The whole is $1 = \frac{n}{n}$, so what is left after taking some fractions is 1 minus their sum.
The absolute value $|a|$ is the distance from $a$ to 0, so it is never negative: $|-2.2| = 2.2$. Then $-|-2.2| = -2.2$.
The midpoint of two fractions is their mean: add them, then divide by 2.
Fractions in real contexts: comparing proportions
When a fraction represents a success rate, the proportion of a mixture or a share, the first step is to write it correctly and, if you need to compare, to simplify it or find an equivalent fraction.
Equivalent fractions and comparing
To find a missing number, work out what the numerator and denominator were multiplied by (cross-multiplying also works). To order fractions, write them over a common denominator using the LCM. To place negative fractions on a number line, the larger the number, the further right it goes.

During a classroom discussion, Aoife makes the following statement about fraction simplification and equivalence:
"If I have any proper, irreducible fraction $\frac{a}{b}$ (with $a < b$) and I add the same natural number $k$ ($k > 0$) to both the numerator and the denominator, I get an equivalent fraction $\frac{a+k}{b+k}$, because I have added the exact same amount to both parts."

- b) Using the values from your counterexample, determine whether the new fraction is greater than or less than the original one.
- c) Explain why Aoife's reasoning is a conceptual mistake: justify what kind of relationship (additive or multiplicative) defines equivalent fractions, and explain why adding $k$ to both terms of a proper fraction makes the resulting value approach 1 instead of remaining constant.
