Polynomials
At a school science day in Cork, Aoife launches a water rocket from a platform. Its height in metres, after a time $t$ in seconds, is $h(t) = -5t^2 + 25t + 2$. With a single formula you know the height at any moment: that is a polynomial in action.
What a polynomial is
$$P(x) = -5x^4 + \frac{2}{3}x^2 - x + 9$$-
Degree of the polynomial: the highest degree of its terms (here, $4$).
-
Leading coefficient: the coefficient of the term of highest degree ($-5$).
-
Constant term: the term that has no $x$ ($9$).
-
Coefficient and literal part: in a term such as $\frac{2}{3}ab^2$, the coefficient is the number in front ($\frac{2}{3}$) and the literal part is the letters with their powers ($ab^2$). The degree of a term is the sum of the powers of its letters (here $1 + 2 = 3$). A term with no letter, like $5$, has coefficient $5$, no literal part and degree $0$.
-
Counting terms: an expression with just one term, such as $-7x^4$ or $5$, is a single part made of a number and letters with their powers. Its coefficient, literal part and degree are found as above. An expression with two terms is, for example, $x^2 - 3$, and one with three terms is, for example, $2x^3 + 5x^2 - 8$.

- b) The coefficient of the degree 2 term.

Putting a polynomial in order and completing it
A polynomial is complete if it has every degree from the highest down to the constant term. If any is missing, it is incomplete.
$x^3 - 4$ is incomplete: it is missing the terms of degree 2 and degree 1. To work in columns, it helps to leave a gap (or a $0$) where a degree is missing.

Design a polynomial $P(x)$ that simultaneously satisfies the following four conditions:
-
Its degree is $3$.
-
It is an incomplete polynomial and does not contain a degree $1$ term.
-
Its leading coefficient is $-2$.
-
Its constant term is $16$.
Once you have written your polynomial:
- a) Check whether the number $x = 2$ is a root of your polynomial by calculating its numerical value $P(2)$ and justifying your conclusion based on the definition of a root.
- b) Without performing lengthy numerical substitutions, reason why it is impossible for the number $x = 0$ to be a root of this polynomial, relying on the value of its constant term.
Numerical value of a polynomial
The numerical value of $P(x)$ at $x = a$ is written $P(a)$: replace $x$ by $a$ (in brackets) and calculate.

Cian has to calculate the numerical value of the polynomial $P(x) = 3x^2 - 4x + 5$ for $x = -2$. In his notebook, he writes the following resolution:
$$P(-2) = 3 \times (-2)^2 - 4 \times -2 + 5 = 3 \times (-4) + 8 + 5 = -12 + 8 + 5 = 1$$When he finishes, Cian adds: "Furthermore, it is an incomplete polynomial because it has no term with $x^3$".
- a) Find and explain in detail the two mistakes made by Cian (one arithmetic mistake in the calculation of powers or signs, and one conceptual mistake in the classification of the polynomial).
- b) Carry out the correct calculation to find $P(-2)$ and classify the polynomial by stating its degree, whether it is complete or incomplete, its leading coefficient, and its constant term.
Roots of a polynomial
If a polynomial is written as a product, such as $(x - 3)(x + 1)$, you can substitute into each bracket: if one bracket is $0$, the whole product is $0$.

Polynomials in real-life problems
Many situations (prices, areas, trajectories) are described by a polynomial and are solved by calculating its numerical value at the moment of interest. To write the expression, let a letter stand for the unknown amount and build the cost step by step.
To estimate, round the coefficients: for $-5t^2 + 29t + 6$ at $t = 2$, use $30$: $-20 + 60 + 6 = 46$, so the answer is a little under that.

A public electric bicycle rental company in Galway charges non-subscribers a monthly fee that depends on usage time. The amount is calculated using the polynomial $C(t) = 0.05t^2 + 1.2t + 8$, where $t$ represents the total number of hours of use per month and $C(t)$ is the resulting cost in euros.
- a) Interpret what the constant term of the polynomial represents in real life by calculating the numerical value $C(0)$.

In a school technology project, a small water rocket is launched vertically. Its height in metres above the ground $t$ seconds after launch is given by the polynomial $h(t) = -5t^2 + 29t + 6$.

- b) Now calculate the exact numerical value of $h(2)$ and compare it with your previous prediction. Do you consider that your estimate was appropriate and useful? Justify your answer.
- c) When calculating $h(6)$, exactly $0$ is obtained. Interpret what this result physically means for the flight of the rocket and what mathematical name the number $6$ receives with respect to this polynomial.

A courier company charges for shipping packages according to the following rate: a fixed handling fee of $G$ euros, plus a price of $2$ € for each kilogram of weight, and a "premium distance" surcharge equal to the square of the package's weight divided by 4.
-
Write the polynomial $C(x)$ that represents the total cost of shipping a package of $x$ kilograms.
-
If the handling fees are $G = 5$ € and we want to send an $8$ kg package, what will the total cost be?
-
If the company decides to double the cost per kilogram and keep the rest of the parameters unchanged, write the new polynomial $C_2(x)$.
Operations with expressions
You can only add or subtract like terms (same letter and same power): $3x^2$ and $-x^2$ are like terms, but $3x^2$ and $3x$ are not.
To multiply, multiply each term in the first bracket by each term in the second, then collect like terms.
Areas and perimeters give expressions too: a rectangle $(x + 3)$ by $(x - 1)$ has area $(x + 3)(x - 1) = x^2 + 2x - 3$ and perimeter $2(x + 3) + 2(x - 1) = 4x + 4$.
Factorising is the reverse of multiplying out: take out the common factor, or use the difference of two squares.
To divide a polynomial by a term, divide each term by it, simplifying coefficients and powers.
To add or subtract monomials, they must be like terms. Select from the following list which ones are like terms to the monomial $5x^2y$: $5xy^2$ $-x^2y$ $2x^2$…
