Algebraic expressions

Before you start, make sure you know: Algebraic language (1st Year, Junior Cycle)

A subscription to your favourite music streaming service costs €$x$ a month. If you share it with two friends and each pays the same, each share comes to $\dfrac{x}{3}$. You don't know exactly how much the subscription costs, but you already know the calculation that needs to be done. That is algebra.

Translating phrases into expressions

Each key word becomes an operation. The phrases in Second Year often have several steps: translate from the inside out, as if following a recipe.

Everyday language Algebraic language
Twice a number plus 5 $2x + 5$
Twice (a number plus 5) $2(x + 5)$
Half of a number minus 3 $\dfrac{x}{2} - 3$
A discount voucher of €5 off the price $x$ $x - 5$
Comparison between the expressions 2x + 5 and 2(x + 5): in the first the doubling acts only on x and in the second on the whole sum "twice a number plus 5" 2x + 5 (only doubles x) "twice (a number plus 5)" 2(x + 5) (doubles the whole sum)

Patterns: the general term

When a figure always grows according to the same rule, you can describe any position $n$ at once with an algebraic expression, the general term $a_n$.

With $n=1$ there are $2$ dots; with $n=2$, $4$; with $n=3$, $6$. Each new position adds $2$ more dots and there is nothing left over at the start: the rule is $a_n = 2n$.

$n$ 1 2 3 4
$3n + 2$ (linear) 5 8 11 14
$n^2 + 2n$ (non-linear) 3 8 15 24

The linear pattern goes up by the same amount each time, so its points lie on a straight line. The non-linear pattern goes up by a bigger amount each time, so its points lie on a curve.

Classifying expressions by their terms

An expression can have one term, two terms, three terms or more. For example, $-7ab^2$ has one term, $x^2 + 10$ has two terms and $4x^3 - 5x + 2$ has three terms. We also name expressions by their degree: linear (degree 1), quadratic (degree 2), cubic (degree 3):

Examples of an expression with one term, two terms and three terms −7ab² one term x² + 10 two terms 4x³−5x+2 three terms with 4 terms or more, just "an expression"
