IUPAC nomenclature of hydrocarbons

A well-constructed IUPAC name is a recipe: it tells you how many carbons are in the main chain, what type of bonds it contains and where each branch is, without needing to draw anything. Learning to read and write it is the foundation of all the organic chemistry that follows.

Before you start, make sure you know: Introduction to organic nomenclature: monofunctional compounds (4th ESO)

Prefixes and endings

Cooking gas (butane) is a gas at room temperature, petrol for cars (a mixture rich in octane) is a liquid and candle wax is made up of solid hydrocarbons: how did chemists devise a systematic code to name chains of different lengths and bond types unambiguously?

Model of the propene molecule, CH₃–CH=CH₂: three carbon atoms in a chain, with a double bond between the first two and the hydrogens that complete four bonds per carbon. H H H H H H C C C prop-: 3 carbons -ene: 1 double bond = propene C₃H₆
