Chemistry in society, technology and the environment

Chemistry doesn't only happen in the laboratory. When a car starts, when a railing rusts, when you take an antacid or when your phone charges, there are chemical reactions behind it. And some of those reactions, on the scale of the whole planet, are changing the climate.

Combustion and the greenhouse effect

When you get into a car that has been parked in the sun in Phoenix in July, the inside is much hotter than the outside. The glass lets sunlight in, and the hot air can't escape. Does the same thing happen in the atmosphere of our whole planet? Not exactly: the atmosphere traps heat in a different way, because certain gases absorb infrared radiation.

Greenhouse effect: sunlight passes through the atmosphere and warms the Earth's surface, which emits heat; part of it escapes into space and part is absorbed by CO₂ molecules, which send it back towards the surface. Sun Sunlight CO₂ CO₂ CO₂ Some of the heat escapes into space CO₂ absorbs the heat and sends some back Space Atmosphere Earth's surface The surface emits heat (infrared radiation)

Acids, bases and acid rain

Lemon juice has a characteristic sour taste and corrodes marble, whereas soap feels slippery and tastes bitter: what chemical property divides these everyday substances into two opposite families that can cancel each other out?

pH scale from 0 to 14 divided into three zones: acidic (pH less than 7), neutral (pH 7) and basic (pH greater than 7), with everyday examples: vinegar and lemon juice, pure water, baking soda and bleach. pH scale 0 7 (neutral) 14 acidic basic vinegar lemon juice pure water baking soda bleach

How can you tell acids from bases? Acids taste sour, like vinegar or lemon juice (never taste chemicals in the lab). Bases, also called alkaline substances, taste bitter and feel slippery, like soap. Indicators such as red cabbage juice or pH paper change color in each family, so you can test safely.

Chemistry and the energy we use

Every kilowatt-hour on your family's electric bill has to come from somewhere. How much does the way we make electricity, or the way we travel, change the amount of $\text{CO}_2$ in the air?

Electric cars store energy in large rechargeable batteries that use reversible reactions, like the ones above. They have no tailpipe, so they emit no $\text{CO}_2$ while driving. But the emissions do not disappear: they depend on how the electricity was made.

Back to the start: a parked car heats up because its glass lets sunlight in and keeps the hot air from escaping, while the atmosphere traps heat by a different process: gases like $\text{CO}_2$ absorb infrared radiation. The more fuel we burn, the more of that gas we add.
