Holistic health

Picture a 7th grader after a long week: no cold, no fever, but worn out, with a sore back and feeling low. Health is much more than "not being ill", and it is built through habits that you repeat every day.

The three components of health

A person can have perfect medical test results and no infection, yet feel sad, lonely and without the energy to face their day-to-day life. Can we say that this person is truly healthy?

Venn diagram with three overlapping circles: physical health, mental health and social health. The area common to all three is wellbeing. Physical health Mental health Social health Complete wellbeing The three components are connected

Sleep and the circadian rhythm

On many mornings you wake up exactly two minutes before the alarm goes off, and you feel hungry at almost the same time at lunch in the cafeteria even if you don't look at the clock. How does your body manage to measure time and coordinate its functions?

24-hour clock of the circadian rhythm: the day, from waking up to going to sleep, takes up about 15 hours and the night, with 8 to 10 hours of sleep, the rest. wake up sleep day awake night 8–10 h circadian rhythm ≈ 24 h

Marcos sleeps an average of $5.5\ \text{h}$ from Monday to Friday and states: "It doesn't matter that I sleep little during the week, on Saturday and Sunday I sleep $11\ \text{h}$ and make up for the lost hours". However, he notices that on Mondays he struggles to memorize new concepts, performs worse in class, and feels irritable. Biologically refute Marcos's claim: justify why the brain cannot compensate all at once for five days' worth of memory consolidation and emotional regulation processes, and explain how this shift in schedules disrupts his circadian rhythms.

Posture and screens

After two hours studying or looking at your phone with your head bowed, you notice a stiff neck and pain in your lower back, even though you have been at rest. Why can simply staying seated end up putting so much strain on our muscles and joints?

Unit challenge. Become a youth wellness advisor and design a realistic proposal to improve adolescents' lifestyles.

  1. Data collection: Go to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services website and check the latest Monitoring the Future survey report to record the percentage of energy drink and alcohol consumption among youth aged $14$ to $16$. Then, record your own data in a table over $48$ hours: servings of fruit and vegetables consumed, liters of water drunk (e.g., $1.5$ L), hours of sleep, and minutes of physical activity.

  2. Comprehensive diagnosis: Analyze your table by comparing it with WHO recommendations. Explain in a short paragraph how frequent consumption of stimulants or alcohol disrupts physical health, impairs cognitive performance, and affects social and emotional relationships.

  3. Action plan: Write a short report (one page) with a proposal for a "Healthy Week" for a student with sedentary habits: design a balanced daily menu, a rest routine, and two leisure alternatives free from toxic substance consumption.

Assessment criteria:

  • Thorough extraction of official data and methodical tracking of daily habits.

  • Scientific justification of the impact of nutrition and addictive substances on overall health.

  • Consistency, creativity, and feasibility of the proposed healthy habits plan.

Back to the beginning: Feeling worn out, with a sore back or feeling low without having an illness happens when you neglect your daily habits: sleeping at odd hours disrupts your body clock, bad posture overloads your spine, and inactivity or isolation dim your mental and social wellbeing.
