Systems of Equations with Two and Three Unknowns. Classification

Before you start, make sure you know: Discussion of a system of two equations (High School Year 2 (semesters 3 and 4))
Before you start, make sure you know: Systems of three equations and three unknowns (High School Year 2 (semesters 3 and 4))

Ximena and Diego go to the stationery store: she buys 2 pens and 1 notebook, he buys 1 pen and 2 notebooks, and with that information they want to find out how much each item costs. Is that always possible? What happens when the data isn't enough, or contradicts itself? You already know how to solve systems by substitution, equating, or addition and subtraction. Here you will classify them and learn to package them into matrices, the tool you will use in the following sections.

Review: classifying a system with two unknowns

Geometric classification of systems with two unknowns in the plane: intersecting lines (unique solution), parallel lines (inconsistent), and coincident lines (infinitely many solutions). SCD: they intersect SI: parallel SCI: they coincide

Classify the following systems of equations with two unknowns according to the number of solutions they have (Consistent Independent System, Consistent Dependent System or Inconsistent System) after attempting to solve them using your preferred method:

  1. a) $\begin{cases} 2x + 3y = 8 \\ 4x + 6y = 15 \end{cases}$
  1. b) $\begin{cases} x - y = 2 \\ 2x + y = 7 \end{cases}$

In a gaming peripherals shop, three friends buy different products.

  • Marcos buys 2 mice and 1 keyboard for $2\,200$ pesos.

  • Julia buys 1 mouse and 2 keyboards for $2\,600$ pesos.

Set up a system of linear equations to determine the price of each item and classify it according to the number of solutions you expect to obtain.

Three unknowns: the solution triple

With three unknowns, each equation $ax+by+cz=d$ represents a plane in space. The solution of a system is a triple $(x, y, z)$: the point, line, or plane where all three planes coincide at once.

Three planes in space that meet at a single point, the solution of a system with a unique solution. three planes: the common triple (x, y, z)

With planes there are more cases than with lines: three planes that meet at a point (SCD); along a line or coinciding (SCI); or with no common point, for example two parallel planes (SI).

An echelon system is solved from the bottom up: the last equation gives $z$, you substitute it into the previous one to find $y$, and so on up to $x$.

An Esports team has won a prize of 12 pesos 000 to be divided among its three members: the captain (A), the strategist (B) and the sniper (C). It is known that:

  • The sum of what B and C receive is equal to what A receives.

  • If the strategist (B) received 1 peso 000 more, they would have exactly the same as the sniper (C).

  1. a) Set up a system of three equations with three unknowns to determine how much each person receives.
  2. b) Classify the system and solve it.

Classifying with the help of elimination and parameters

To classify without guessing, reduce the augmented matrix with row operations until you reach echelon form and read the result:

  • A row $[0\ 0\ 0 \mid c]$ with $c\neq 0$ says $0=c$: the system is inconsistent.

  • If there is no contradiction and there are fewer nonzero rows than unknowns, there are infinitely many solutions; the free unknowns are taken as parameters.

  • If there is no contradiction and there are as many nonzero rows as unknowns, the solution is unique.

If the system depends on a parameter, reduce the same way, but before dividing by an expression containing the parameter, analyze separately the case where it equals zero.

Classify the following system of linear equations according to the number of solutions, using Gaussian elimination:

$\begin{cases} x + 2y - z = 3 \\ 2x - y + z = 1 \\ 5x + 5y - 2z = 10 \end{cases}$

If it is consistent, find its solution or solutions. If it has infinitely many solutions, write the solution in parametric form.

  1. b) Is there any value of $k$ for which the drones follow parallel trajectories and never meet? Justify your answer using ranks.

Summary

Back to the beginning: with Ximena and Diego's purchases, $2p+c$ and $p+2c$ give lines that intersect, so the price of each item is determined; if the data were proportional, information would be missing, and if it were contradictory, there would be no possible prices.
