Systems with parameters
A streaming platform launches a monthly promotion represented by a number $k$. The revenue it reports depends on how many users are on each plan, and that breakdown is found by solving a system that contains $k$. The question: are there values of $k$ for which we can no longer tell how many users there are of each type, or even for which the data are impossible? That is what it means to analyze a system with a parameter: to say, depending on the value of the parameter, how many solutions it has.
The analysis plan
For a square system (as many equations as unknowns), the determinant tells you where to look for the "special" values of the parameter.

Solve the system in the cases where it is consistent with infinitely many solutions, expressing the solution in parametric form.

If the system is consistent with a unique solution, is there any value of $k$ for which the solution is $(x, y, z) = (1, 1, 1)$? Justify your answer.
Non-square systems and known solutions
If the system has a different number of equations than unknowns, $\det A$ doesn't exist and you compare the rank of $A$ with the rank of $A^*$ directly.
The reverse path is also useful: if you are given a solution, substitute it into the equations to find the parameter. Then you analyze the system with that value.

Geometric interpretation: position of three planes
Each equation with three unknowns is a plane. Analyzing the system amounts to saying how the planes intersect.
| Ranks | Result | Position of the planes |
|---|---|---|
| $\operatorname{rank}(A)=\operatorname{rank}(A^*)=3$ | unique solution | they meet at a point |
| $\operatorname{rank}(A)=\operatorname{rank}(A^*)=2$ | infinitely many, 1 parameter | they meet along a line (or two coincide and intersect the third) |
| $\operatorname{rank}(A)=\operatorname{rank}(A^*)=1$ | infinitely many, 2 parameters | the three planes coincide |
| $\operatorname{rank}(A)<\operatorname{rank}(A^*)$ | inconsistent | there is no point common to all three |

Three planes in space $\mathbb{R}^3$ are given by the following equations, where $a$ is a real parameter:
$\pi_1: ax + y + z = 1$

Back to the beginning: in the platform's system, $\det A=(k-1)^2$, so $k=1$ is the only value where the unique solution is lost. There you compare the ranks to find out whether the data are impossible or simply insufficient.
