Intervals

Before you start, make sure you know: Intervals, rays and neighborhoods (High School Year 1 (semesters 1 and 2))
Before you start, make sure you know: Inequalities (High School Year 2 (semesters 3 and 4))

In a factory in the industrial zone of Monterrey, a machine cuts tubes with a diameter of 12 mm, and only the ones that deviate by less than 0.05 mm are accepted. How do you write, in a single line and without ambiguity, the set of accepted diameters? In limits and continuity you will write conditions like this all the time: domains, neighborhoods, and sets of "forbidden" values. This section reviews interval notation and its operations so that this language comes naturally to you. At the end we return to the machine.

Interval notation

An interval is a stretch of the real line. We describe it by its two endpoints and by saying whether each one is included (bracket) or not (parenthesis).

On the number line, a filled dot (●) indicates an included endpoint and an open dot (○) an excluded endpoint.

In electronic component design, the voltage tolerance of a sensor is defined by the set of real values $x$ satisfying the following inequality:

$-3 \leq x < 4.5$

Express this set of values using interval notation and state the type of interval (open, closed, or half-open).

Absolute value and neighborhoods

The absolute value $|x - a|$ is the distance between $x$ and $a$ on the number line. That is why a condition like "the distance to $a$ is less than $r$" describes an interval centered at $a$.

Neighborhood with center a and radius r on the real line: the open interval from a minus r to a plus r. a − r a a + r r r

To go from absolute value to an interval:

Back to the beginning: the accepted diameters are the neighborhood $E(12, 0.05) = (11.95, 12.05)$.

In the physics lab, a precision sensor measures the diameter of a metal part. The control system accepts parts whose diameter $x$ (in mm) meets the following tolerance condition expressed by an absolute value:

$$|x - 12| < 0.05$$

Represent this situation graphically on the real number line and express the set of accepted values as an interval and as a neighbourhood $E(a; r)$.

You can use this number line, where only the center of the tolerance, $12$, has been marked. Complete it in your notebook: mark the endpoints, shade the accepted values and indicate the radius.

The idea of ε and δ

Saying $\lim_{x \to a} f(x) = L$ means, in the language of neighborhoods: as close as you want to $L$ (at distance less than $\varepsilon$) is achieved if $x$ is close enough to $a$ (at distance less than $\delta$). That is,

$$0 < |x - a| < \delta \implies |f(x) - L| < \varepsilon.$$

In the formal definition of a limit, when we say that $\lim_{x \to 2} f(x) = 5$, we are stating that for every $\varepsilon>0$ there exists a $\delta>0$ such that, if $0<|x-2|<\delta$, then $|f(x)-5|<\varepsilon$. We take $\varepsilon = 0.2$, which determines a neighborhood of $5$ on the $Y$ axis. The graph shows the function $f(x) = 2x + 1$ and the point of the curve with $x = 2$.

Inequalities and their solution as intervals

The solution of an inequality is almost always an interval or a union of them. The general method: move everything to one side, factor, find the points where each factor changes sign, and study the signs on each stretch.

If you are given two conditions at once (for example, an inequality and an absolute value), solve each one separately and take the intersection of the intervals. If you are asked when something falls outside a range $[p, q]$, set up $T < p$ and $T > q$ separately and take the union.

Intervals as the domain of a function

When the function is a root of a quotient or a logarithm inside a root, the conditions chain together: for example, $\sqrt{\ln(u)}$ requires $\ln(u) \ge 0$, that is, $u \ge 1$, and also $u > 0$ (already included). And $\sqrt{N/D}$ requires $N/D \ge 0$ with $D \ne 0$.
