Limits at Infinity
A TikTok account grows every month, but will it keep growing forever or approach a ceiling? That is asking about the limit of a function as $x \to +\infty$. Here you will compare infinities of different kinds (an exponential against a polynomial, a logarithm against a root) and resolve indeterminate forms that can no longer be fixed just by looking at degrees.
Polynomials and rational functions, now with parameters
If $y = L$ is the value that $f(x)$ approaches as $x\to\pm\infty$, the line $y = L$ is a horizontal asymptote of the graph.

Given the rational function $f(x) = \dfrac{ax^2 + 3x - 5}{2x^2 - k}$, calculate the values of the real parameters $a$ and $k$ knowing that the function has a horizontal asymptote at $y = 3$ and that its graph passes through the point $(1, -2)$. Once found, check whether the limit as $x \to -\infty$ coincides with the limit as $x \to +\infty$.
Reading limits from graphs and real situations
A limit at infinity can be read from the graph: what height does the curve approach as you move far to the right or far to the left?

The number of followers of a new influencer on a social network, measured in thousands, evolves according to the function:
$$S(t) = \frac{100t^2}{2t^2 + 50}$$where $t$ is the time elapsed in months since opening the account. Draw a sketch of the situation and calculate how many followers they will have in the long term (when $t \to +\infty$).
You can do it on paper and send a photo with your answer.

A video game server has estimated that the number of simultaneously connected users during the first year follows the function $U(t) = \dfrac{500t^2 + 1000}{0.2t^2 + 5}$, where $t$ is the time in months.
- a) What happens to the number of users if time increases indefinitely?
- b) Interpret the result in terms of horizontal asymptotes.
Roots and absolute values with negative $x$
When there are roots, each one behaves like its dominant term: $\sqrt{9x^4+2x^2-1}\approx 3x^2$ and $\sqrt{9x^2+5}\approx 3|x|$.
Removing a linear absolute value
An absolute value is removed according to the sign of what is inside: $|u|=u$ if $u\ge0$ and $|u|=-u$ if $u<0$. When $x\to-\infty$, an expression like $3x-2$ is negative (for $x<\tfrac23$ it already is), so $|3x-2|=-(3x-2)=2-3x$. When $x\to+\infty$, on the other hand, $|3x-2|=3x-2$.

$$f(x) = \frac{|3x - 2| + \sqrt{x^2 + 5x}}{2x - 7}$$That is, calculate $\lim_{x \to -\infty} f(x)$. Take special care with the sign of the variable $x$ when inserting or extracting factors from the square root and when removing the absolute value.
Hierarchy of infinities
When $x\to+\infty$, not all infinities grow equally fast. If you divide the one that grows faster by the one that grows more slowly, the limit is $\pm\infty$; the other way around, it is $0$.

Application: oblique asymptotes and functions that level off
If $\dfrac{f(x)}{x}\to m$ (with $m\ne0$ finite) and $f(x)-mx\to n$, the line $y=mx+n$ is an oblique asymptote. If $m=0$ and $f(x)\to n$, it is the horizontal asymptote $y=n$.

A prototype ion propulsion engine for satellites has an energy consumption $E(x)$ in joules that depends on the speed $x$ (in km/s) according to the expression:

Given the function $f(x) = \frac{ax^3 + bx^2 + 1}{2x^2 - 4}$, determine the values of the real coefficients $a$ and $b$ knowing that the function has an oblique asymptote whose gradient is $m = 3$ and that the limit of the function as $x$ tends to $+\infty$ after subtracting its gradient component (that is, the term $n$ of the asymptote $y=mx+n$) is $4$.
In other words, solve for $a$ and $b$ knowing that:
-
$\lim_{x \to +\infty} \frac{f(x)}{x} = 3$
-
$\lim_{x \to +\infty} [f(x) - 3x] = 4$
Back to the beginning: the TikTok account levels off if its follower function has a finite limit, as in $S(t)\to50$ thousand; if the limit were infinite, it would keep growing without a ceiling.
