Kinematic Variables: Position, Velocity, and Acceleration as Vectors
A delivery drone flies over the Condesa neighborhood in Mexico City, and a Metrobús turns around a roundabout without changing what its speedometer reads. When everything happens along a straight line, a single signed number is enough. But in a plane, a single number doesn't tell you which way. You need vectors: quantities with magnitude, direction, and sense. All the kinematics in this course rests on three of them: position, velocity, and acceleration. At the end we will answer: why is there acceleration if the speedometer doesn't move?
The position vector
If you want to tell a classmate where the drone landed, saying "20 m away" is not enough: you have to say how many meters east and how many north. How do we combine distance and direction into a single mathematical object?
