Scientific notation

Before you start, make sure you know: Standard form (3rd Year, Junior Cycle)

Ireland's national debt is around €220,000,000,000, while a human hair is only 0.000 08 m thick. Science, economics and the CSO all deal with numbers so large or so small that writing out every zero is a mess. Scientific notation makes them manageable without losing precision. In the Leaving Cert it is written as $a \times 10^n$ with $1 \le a < 10$.

Significant figures: count from the first non-zero digit, so $0.004\,070$ has $4$ significant figures. To round to $3$ significant figures, look at the next digit. In scientific notation the significant figures are just the digits of $a$: $4.0705 \times 10^{-3}$ rounds to $4.07 \times 10^{-3}$. Round only at the very end of a calculation.

For an Economics report in 5th Year of secondary school (Leaving Certificate), Aoife has to compare and add two budget items that the Department of Education allocates to study grants: item $A = 4.8 \times 10^6$ euros and item $B = 7.5 \times 10^5$ euros. Aoife states the following in her draft:

"Since $7.5$ is greater than $4.8$, item $B$ has a larger financial endowment than item $A$. Furthermore, the total money allocated between both items is $(4.8 + 7.5) \times 10^{6+5} = 12.3 \times 10^{11} = 1.23 \times 10^{12}$ euros".

  1. a) Identify the two conceptual errors made by Aoife (one in the comparison and another in the addition) and explain with reasoning why her deductions are mathematically false.

An auditing consultancy analyzes the accounts of an e-commerce company. It is known that the annual net profit, $B$, follows the formula $B = I - C$, where $I$ is the gross revenue and $C$ the total operating costs. In turn, the total costs result from making $N$ deliveries with a fixed unit logistics cost of $c_u = 3.5 \times 10^1$ euros per shipment (that is, $C = N \times c_u$). The following final figures are available:

Errors and tolerance

Number line showing the tolerance interval from a minus r to a plus r around the value a. |x − a| ≤ r a − raa + r

No measurement is exact. Scientific notation lets you say how far off a value can be, even for very large or very small quantities.

Rounding: rounding to a given digit gives an error of at most half a unit of that digit. If you round $a \times 10^n$ to $k$ decimal places in $a$, the absolute error is at most $0.5 \times 10^{-k} \times 10^n$. For example $6.4378 \times 10^{5} \approx 6.44 \times 10^{5}$ has an error of at most $0.005 \times 10^{5} = 5 \times 10^{2}$.

Adding or subtracting measurements: the absolute error bounds add. If $x = 3.2 \times 10^{-3} \pm 1 \times 10^{-5}$ and $y = 4.1 \times 10^{-3} \pm 2 \times 10^{-5}$, then $x + y = 7.3 \times 10^{-3} \pm 3 \times 10^{-5}$, and the same bound holds for $x - y$.
