Definition of the derivative of a function at a point
A Luas tram leaves Stephen's Green and its speed at each instant is a single number. How can that be, when speed is distance divided by time? Earlier you saw that, as you narrow the interval $[a, a+h]$ until $h$ tends to $0$, the average rate of change settles down to a single number. Now we write this with the full rigour of the limit: that is the derivative, and in Leaving Cert Higher Level you will use it as a calculation tool, not just as an intuitive idea.

One-sided derivatives and corner points
Just as with limits, if the difference quotient is calculated only with $h\to0^+$ or $h\to0^-$, you obtain the one-sided derivatives. The function is differentiable at $a$ only if both exist and are equal.
