Logarithms

How many years do you have to leave money in a credit union account for it to double at a fixed interest rate? How many times more energy does a magnitude 7 earthquake release than a magnitude 5 one? Both questions have the same structure: an unknown is "hidden" in an exponent, and the tool to free it is the logarithm, the inverse operation of raising to a power.

Design a logarithmic equation of the form $\log(x) + \log(x - k) = 1$ (where $k$ is a positive constant integer) that simultaneously satisfies these two conditions:

  1. When transformed into a polynomial equation using the properties of logarithms, it admits the values $x = 5$ and $x = -2$ as candidate solutions.

  2. When checking validity in the original equation, only $x = 5$ is a valid real solution, while $x = -2$ must necessarily be discarded.

  1. a) Algebraically deduce the exact numerical value that the constant $k$ must have.
  2. b) Solve the equation step by step with the obtained value of $k$ and justify rigorously, using the formal definition of a logarithm, why $x = -2$ is rejected and $x = 5$ is accepted.
