Value proposition and customer segment
A tutoring app can have the best teachers in the world: if it targets retired people instead of ESO students, it will not sell a single lesson. The commercial function starts before talking about price or advertising: it starts by deciding who you are selling to and what you are promising them.
The value proposition: the promise to the customer
Every value proposition is born from a real problem. Before asking "what am I selling?", it is worth asking "what am I solving, and for whom?".

Segmenting the market and defining the buyer persona
Explain what a buyer persona is and describe the one for a coffee shop located next to a university: approximate age, routines, what they look for and what bothers them.

The fit between proposition and segment
The figure summarises the central idea of this section: a value proposition only works when it fits a specific segment. What solves a problem for one group may be of no interest at all to another.

When the fit fails: redefining the segment

A ready-meals company thought it sold to "people who cannot cook", but discovers that its real customers are parents with little time. Explain how the value proposition and the communication change when the segment is redefined in this way, with two specific examples.
Back to the beginning: The tutoring app fails with retired people because there is no fit: the value proposition does not solve any real problem for that group, whereas for ESO students and their families it meets an obvious need.
