Division of polynomials

A school is building a new rectangular rehearsal room for the Transition Year musical. Its floor area is $3x^2 + 15x$ square metres and its width is $3x$ metres. How long is it? We need to divide expressions. The division works just like the long division you learnt in primary school, and it has a quick shortcut for dividing by $x - a$.

Long division of expressions

By a single term: divide each term. $\dfrac{3x^2 + 15x}{3x} = \dfrac{3x^2}{3x} + \dfrac{15x}{3x} = x + 5$.

By a linear or quadratic expression (dividing a cubic by a linear expression is Higher Level only; dividing by a quadratic goes beyond the Junior Cycle Mathematics specification): it is done like the long division of numbers, term by term:

Step-by-step long division of x³ − 5x² + 3x − 4 by x − 2, with quotient x² − 3x − 3 and remainder −10. x³ − 5x² + 3x − 4 x − 2 x² − 3x − 3 −x³ + 2x² −3x² + 3x 3x² − 6x −3x − 4 3x − 6 −10 1. x³ ÷ x = x² (to the quotient) 2. x² × (x − 2), sign changed 3. add and bring down the next term 4. repeat until the degree is less than the divisor remainder = −10

Given the polynomial division $(6x^4 - x^3 - 2x^2 + 8x - 1) : (2x^2 - x + 1)$:

  1. a) Before carrying out the algorithm, estimate and reason:
  1. What exact degree will the quotient polynomial have?

  2. What is the maximum degree the remainder can have? Could the remainder be a second-degree polynomial like $x^2 - 3$? Justify it according to the definition of polynomial division.

  3. What will be the leading monomial (the term with the highest degree) of the quotient?

  1. b) Perform the traditional long division using the box method algorithm and check whether your estimates about the degrees and the leading monomial match the obtained result.

A shortcut for dividing by x − a

When the divisor has the form $x - a$, there is a shortcut that only uses the coefficients. We divide $x^3 - 5x^2 + 3x - 4$ by $x - 2$ (so $a = 2$):

Diagram of the shortcut for dividing x³ − 5x² + 3x − 4 by x − 2, giving quotient x² − 3x − 3 and remainder −10. 1−53−4 2 2−6−6 1−3−3 −10 quotient: x² − 3x − 3remainder
  1. Write the coefficients (with 0 in the gaps) and the number $a$ on the left.

  2. Bring down the first coefficient.

  3. Multiply it by $a$, write it under the next one and add.

  4. Repeat until the end. The last number is the remainder; the others are the coefficients of the quotient (one degree lower).

The remainder theorem

In the example, the remainder of dividing by $x - 2$ was $-10$. Calculate $P(2) = 8 - 20 + 6 - 4 = -10$. It matches! That is no coincidence:

This way you can find the remainder without dividing, just by substituting. And in particular:

  • If $P(a) = 0$, the division by $(x - a)$ is exact: $a$ is a root and $(x - a)$ is a factor of $P(x)$.
Diagram of the remainder theorem showing that the remainder of dividing P(x) by x − a is P(a), and that if it equals 0, then a is a root. remainder of P(x) : (x − a) = P(a) if it equals 0 a is a root

Roots and factors

Factorising means writing a polynomial as a product of simpler polynomials, just like $12 = 2^2 \cdot 3$. Tools, in this order:

  1. Common factor (HCF): $x^3 - 4x = x(x^2 - 4)$.

  2. Difference of two squares: $x^2 - 4 = (x + 2)(x - 2)$.

  3. The shortcut testing integer roots: if the polynomial has integer coefficients, its integer roots are among the divisors of the constant term.

Algebraic fractions

A fraction with polynomials is simplified like those with numbers: factorise the numerator and denominator and cancel the common factors.

$$\frac{x^2 - 9}{x^2 + 3x} = \frac{(x + 3)(x - 3)}{x\,(x + 3)} = \frac{x - 3}{x}\qquad (x \ne 0,\ x \ne -3)$$

The restrictions come from the original denominator: $x(x + 3)$ cannot be zero. Even though the factor $x + 3$ disappears, $x = -3$ is still excluded. The simplified expression matches the original one only on its original domain.
