Inverse proportion function
The Dublin to Galway road trip is 240 km. The faster you go, the less time it takes: at 60 km/h, 4 hours; at 80 km/h, 3 hours; at 120 km/h, 2 hours. The product speed × time is always 240. This relationship, which you already know from inverse proportion, has a very characteristic graph: the hyperbola. (Later we will check why the bus could never really go at 120 km/h all the way.)
The function $y = \frac{k}{x}$
Move $k$, even to negative values:
-
If $k > 0$: the two branches lie in quadrants I and III, and the function decreases on each branch.
-
If $k < 0$: the branches lie in quadrants II and IV, and the function increases on each branch.
-
The larger $|k|$ is, the further from the origin the branches are.
To decide whether a relationship is inverse proportion, try to write it as $x \times y = k$ with $k$ a fixed number. For $y = \frac{1}{2x}$ we get $x \times y = \frac{1}{2}$, so it is inverse proportion with $k = \frac{1}{2}$. For $y = \frac{x}{3}$ we get $\frac{y}{x} = \frac{1}{3}$, which is direct proportion instead.

The figure shows the hyperbolas $y = \frac{3}{x}$ and $y = \frac{12}{x}$ for positive values of $x$, as shown below.
- a) Match each curve with its equation.

- c) Where would you draw $y = \frac{6}{x}$? Justify your answer.
Asymptotes
The hyperbola gets closer and closer to the axes, but never touches them:
-
When $x$ gets close to 0, $y$ becomes enormous (positive or negative).
-
When $x$ becomes very large, $y$ gets close to 0.
These lines that the graph hugs without ever touching them are called asymptotes. In $y = \frac{k}{x}$ they are the two axes.

- c) Explain in your own words what it means for the coordinate axes to be asymptotes of the hyperbola.

In a physics experiment, a piston compresses a gas at constant temperature and it is found that the pressure $p$ and the volume $V$ satisfy $p \times V = 6$, with the volume in litres and the pressure in atmospheres, as shown in the figure.
- a) Write the function that gives the pressure in terms of the volume.

- d) What happens to the pressure if the volume becomes very small? Could it ever be $V = 0$?
Problems with the hyperbola
If you know it is an inverse proportion function and you know one point, you already know $k$: $k = x \cdot y$.
Back to our Dublin to Galway trip: the graph below shows $t = \frac{240}{v}$. Time never reaches 0, however fast you go.
A line and a hyperbola
To find where a line meets $y = \frac{k}{x}$, set the two expressions equal, multiply every term by $x$ and solve the quadratic equation.
