Characteristics of a function

Looking at a graph is not just "seeing a line": it is discovering where it starts and ends, when it rises and when it falls, where it reaches its maximum and whether it repeats. These are the characteristics of a function, and with them you can describe everything that happens in a phenomenon, from your phone's battery to the height of a drone or of a sliotar in flight.

Domain and range

  • Domain: the values of $x$ for which the function exists (where there is "a graph" from left to right).

  • Range (or image): the values that $y$ takes (from bottom to top).

  1. a) What are the domain and the range of the function?
  1. b) Is it an increasing or a decreasing function? What does this mean in the context of the problem?
  1. c) At what point does the graph cross the $y$-axis (y-intercept) and what does it represent?

Continuity

A function is continuous if it can be drawn without lifting your pencil. If there are jumps or gaps, it is discontinuous at those points. Tariffs charged in bands (the price of sending a parcel according to its weight) are usually discontinuous: they make "jumps".

Graph of a discontinuous function with a jump that breaks the line of the curve at one point. up to 1 kg1–2 kg2–3 kg jumps:discontinuous

On a graph, a solid dot means the point is included and an open dot means it is not. At a jump, the value of the function is the one at the solid dot. So in the parcel graph, a parcel weighing exactly 1 kg is charged the lower price if the solid dot is on the lower step.

A function can also be discontinuous because a value of $x$ is missing from its domain. For $g(x) = \dfrac{x^2 - 9}{x - 4}$ the graph breaks at $x = 4$, so you must avoid that value.

In a delivery company, the cost of sending a parcel depends on its weight. However, the price changes abruptly when exceeding certain weight bands. Observe the graph of the cost function:

0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 5 10 15 Weight x (kg) Cost C(x) (€)

Answer the following questions about continuity:

  1. Is this function continuous? Justify your answer by describing what happens at the points $x = 2kg$ and $x = 5kg$ (represented by the jumps in the graph).

  2. State the domain and the range of this function according to the diagram.

  3. If a parcel weighs exactly $2kg$, what is its cost? Look at the solid and open dots to decide.

$$P(T) = \frac{T^2 - 16}{T - 5}$$
  1. a) Calculate the domain of this function. For what temperature does the model cease to make physical sense?
  2. b) Find the x-intercepts. What do these values mean for the insect population?
  3. c) Are there intervals of the independent variable where the function is not continuous? Justify whether the biologist should avoid any specific temperature.

Increasing, maximum and minimum points

  • Increasing on an interval: as $x$ increases, $y$ increases (the graph rises, reading from left to right).

  • Decreasing: as $x$ increases, $y$ decreases (it falls).

  • Local maximum: a point where it changes from increasing to decreasing (a "peak"). Local minimum: from decreasing to increasing (a "valley").

Run your finger along the graph and notice how $f(x)$ changes:

Continuous curve with rising and falling sections illustrating a local maximum at the peak and a local minimum in the valley. maximum minimum increasingdecreasingincreasing

A function is constant on an interval if its graph is horizontal there: $y$ does not change. For example, a phone's battery level stays the same while it is plugged in and already full.

The absolute maximum is the highest value of $y$ on the whole domain, and the absolute minimum is the lowest. On a closed domain they can be at an endpoint. A local maximum only has to beat its neighbours.

To sketch a graph from a story, take it one stage at a time. For a tank filled at a steady rate, then paused, then filled more slowly: a rising straight line, then a horizontal line (constant), then a rising line with a smaller slope. There are no jumps, so it is continuous.

Symmetry and periodicity

  • Even symmetry: the graph is symmetrical about the $Y$ axis: $f(-x) = f(x)$. Example: $x^2$.

  • Odd symmetry: symmetrical about the origin: $f(-x) = -f(x)$. Example: $x^3$.

  • Periodic: the graph repeats itself exactly after a certain interval, the period. Examples: the tides, the heartbeat, a Ferris wheel.

Periodic zigzag graph repeating every fixed interval, with one period marked at the bottom. period repeats

A graph can also be symmetrical about a vertical line $x = a$ other than the $y$-axis. Then the values at $a + k$ and $a - k$ are equal. If a pattern is symmetrical about $t = 12$, the value at $t = 6$ equals the value at $t = 18$.

For a periodic function with period $T$, $f(x + nT) = f(x)$ for any whole number $n$. To find a value far away, subtract multiples of $T$. If the period is $6$ and $f(2) = 5$, then $f(44) = f(2) = 5$ because $44 = 6 \times 7 + 2$.
