The concept of a function
The battery of your mobile phone depends on how long you have been playing. The price of a subscription depends on the number of months. The balance on your Leap Card depends on the number of Luas journeys you have taken. When one quantity depends on another in such a way that each value gives exactly one result, we have a function.
What a function is
A mapping diagram (arrow diagram) shows the same idea: every input has exactly one arrow leaving it.

Observe the following relationships between quantities and determine, in each case, whether it is a function or not:
- a) Each mobile phone number is associated with the name of its owner in the contact list.
- b) Each student in your class is associated with their height measured in centimetres.
- c) Each supermarket barcode is associated with the price of the corresponding product.
- d) Each person is associated with the eye colour of their siblings.

At a secondary school, different relationships between quantities are being analysed. Determine, giving reasons, which of the following situations correspond to a function and, if so, identify the independent variable and the dependent variable:
- a) Each student's ID number is associated with their current age.
- b) Each maximum temperature reached in the playground during a day is associated with the times at which that temperature was recorded.
- c) The amount of gigabytes ($GB$) consumed on a mobile tariff is associated with the monthly bill price.
- d) Each natural number is associated with its factors.
Four ways of expressing a function
The same function can be given in four ways. Example: a subscription costs €9 per month plus a €5 joining fee.
| Form | Example |
|---|---|
| Statement | "€5 joining fee and €9 for each month" |
| Table | months: 1, 2, 3, 4 → euros: 14, 23, 32, 41 |
| Formula | $y = 9x + 5$ |
| Graph | points in a straight line on the plane |
The formula is the most powerful: it lets you calculate any value. To find $f(a)$, you substitute $a$ for $x$:

Is it a function? The vertical line test
A graph represents a function if any vertical line cuts it at most once. If some vertical line cuts it twice, that $x$ would have two values of $y$.

Reading graphs
Graphs tell stories. In a graph of "hiker's height against distance", a rising section is an uphill stretch, a horizontal one is flat ground and a falling one is a descent. When reading them, always ask yourself: what is on each axis and in what units?

Domain, range and co-domain
The domain is the set of inputs that make sense in the situation. The range is the set of outputs you actually get. In real problems, the situation often limits the domain: a tank cannot be filled above its height, and you cannot buy half a ticket.
Some formulas also exclude values for mathematical reasons. For $y = \sqrt{x}$ we take only the positive root, so each $x \ge 0$ gives one output and it is a function.
When the inputs are whole numbers (such as months or games), the graph is a set of separate points. Do not join them with a line, because values in between make no sense.

A video game programmer is designing the reward system for a new level. The amount of "Stellar Credits" ($C$) that a player receives depends on the time ($t$) in minutes taken to complete a mission, according to the relationship:

Building a formula from a situation
To write a function from a problem, name the variables, then find how the output is built from the input. Then state the domain that the situation allows. If you have a table, look at how the outputs change: a constant difference points to a linear formula.
A function is linear when the highest power of $x$ is $1$. If $x^2$ or $x^3$ appears, it is not linear.

Functions with more than one rule
Sometimes a function follows one rule for some inputs and a different rule for others. This is a piecewise function, and each rule comes with the interval where it applies.
A function is periodic if its graph repeats the same pattern. The period is the length of one repeat. For example, if a Luas arrives every 10 minutes, your waiting time repeats every 10 minutes, so the period is $10$.
