Representing data

Your class is voting on where to go for the school tour: Dublin Zoo, the Cliffs of Moher or Croke Park. A list of 30 votes is hard to read. A well-drawn picture can be understood at a glance. Each type of graph suits a different type of data: choosing the right one is just as important as drawing it well. By the end you will know which graph shows the school tour vote best.

Pictogram

A pictogram uses a simple picture to represent a fixed number of data values. You must always state the key (how much each symbol is worth).

At the school library they want to visualize how many books have been lent out each day of the week. They have decided to use a pictogram where each "book" symbol represents $5$ loans.

Day Books lent
Monday $20$
Tuesday $15$
Wednesday $25$
Thursday $10$
Friday $30$

Draw the corresponding pictogram in your notebook using a simple symbol to represent the books. Calculate how many symbols you need for each day.

Frequency polygon and width of the intervals

For ordered numerical values, the frequency polygon joins the points $(x_i,f_i)$ at the tops of the bars; with intervals of equal width, it uses their class midpoints. It summarises the distribution, not a change over time. Do not join categories that have no numerical order as if there were intermediate values between them.

In the histograms in this section, the intervals all have the same width. If their widths were different, the heights would have to be adjusted so that the area, and not simply the height, represented the frequency. An interval with a frequency of zero can leave a gap: this does not mean that its values are impossible.

Three 1st Year students are preparing an informative poster with data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) on youth leisure and defend three different graphic proposals:

  • Cian's proposal: To show the year-by-year evolution of the percentage of young digital readers between 2015 and 2024 ($10$ consecutive years), he proposes using a pie chart with $10$ circular sectors.

  • Aoife's proposal: To represent the daily time dedicated to personal reading, grouped into the intervals $[0, 15)$, $[15, 30)$, $[30, 45)$, and $[45, 60)$ minutes, she proposes a bar chart with a visible separation between bars.

  • Seán's proposal: To represent the number of books read per year per student ($0$, $1$, $2$, $3$, or more than $3$), he proposes drawing a continuous line graph connecting the top ends of each value.

  1. a) Critically analyse each proposal: explain with mathematical arguments why each classmate's choice is incorrect or ill-advised based on the nature of the variable.
