The set of integers
Met Éireann says it will fall to $-4\,^{\circ}\text{C}$ tonight in Athlone. You owe a friend €15. A diver off the Kerry coast is at $-20$ metres. With natural numbers you cannot write any of this: you need the integers, which add the negatives so we can talk about what is "below zero".
The set $\mathbb{Z}$
For every negative situation there is a symmetrical positive one: going up/going down, earning/owing, before/after an event.
In everyday life we use integers to express opposite situations. Associate an integer (positive or negative) with each of the following situations: a) The outdoor…

An archaeologist finds a coin at an excavation site. While researching it, he discovers that it was minted in the year $45$ BC. If the archaeologist lives in the year $2024$ AD, answer:

- b) What is the opposite of the year the coin was minted?
- c) Represent approximately, on a timeline that you will draw in your notebook, the year the coin was minted and the year in which the archaeologist lives. Mark the year $0$ and indicate which side corresponds to the years BC and which to the years AD.

Ordering several integers
When you have to order a list, place the numbers mentally on the number line: the ones further to the right are greater.

Moving along the number line
To add a positive number, move to the right. To add a negative number (or take away a positive one), move to the left. Start at the first number and count the steps.
Temperatures and floors work the same way. A lift on floor $2$ that goes down $7$ floors reaches $2 - 7 = -5$, which is basement level $5$. The net change is not the same as the total distance travelled: for the distance you add the absolute value of each move, whichever way it goes.

A temperature sensor in a cryogenics laboratory initially reads $12\,^{\circ}\text{C}$ (look at the scale). Because of an experiment, the temperature drops $18\,^{\circ}\text{C}$, then rises $5\,^{\circ}\text{C}$ and finally drops again $3\,^{\circ}\text{C}$.
- a) Represent each of the temperature changes using integers.
- b) What is the final temperature recorded by the sensor?
- c) Is the final temperature above or below $0\,^{\circ}\text{C}$?

A delivery driver gets into the lift of a shopping centre on the ground floor ($0$). First, he goes up to the storeroom on floor $+5$, then goes down $8$ floors to collect goods in the car park, and finally goes up $2$ floors to make a delivery.
- a) Which floor is the car park on? Express the result as an integer.
- b) On which floor does he make the final delivery?
- c) How many floors in total has the delivery driver travelled throughout his route? (Hint: use the concept of modulus).

In a board game, your counter is on the square representing the integer $-4$. You roll a special die and get the following consecutive moves:
-
Move forward $6$ positions.
-
Move back twice what the modulus of $-3$ indicates.
-
Move to the opposite of the square you are currently on.
Which square do you end up on at the end of the game? Show all intermediate steps.
Distance, midpoint and clues
The distance between two integers $a$ and $b$ on the number line is the greater minus the smaller, that is $|a - b|$. The midpoint $M$ of $[AB]$ is the point with $|AM| = |MB|$.
A clue like "the distance from $x$ to $0$ is $7$" means $|x| = 7$, so $x = 7$ or $x = -7$. List all the possible values first, then use the other clues (sign, multiple, prime) to cross some out.
To show that a statement is false, one counterexample is enough. For example, "$|a|$ is always greater than $a$" is false because $|3| = 3$. Examples that work never prove that a statement is always true.

Consider the integers $m = -14$ and $n = +6$ represented on a number line.
- a) Before doing any exact calculations, make a reasoned estimate: will the exact midpoint between $m$ and $n$ be located to the left or to the right of zero? Will the total distance between the two be greater or less than $|m|$? Explain what you base your intuition on.
- b) Now calculate the exact numerical value of the distance separating $m$ from $n$ on the line, relying on the meaning of their absolute values.
- c) Determine which integer represents the midpoint between $m$ and $n$. Check whether your initial estimate in part a) was correct and explain why the sign of the midpoint matches the sign of the number with the greater absolute value.

Two points, $A$ and $B$, have been marked on a number line. Knowing that the distance between point $A$ and point $B$ is $15$ units and that point $A$ corresponds to the integer $-6$:
- a) Determine which integer point $B$ represents if it is to the right of $A$.
- b) Calculate the value of $|A| + |B|$.
- c) If we place a new point $C$ right in the middle of the segment joining $A$ and $B$, what number would $C$ represent?

Imagine two integers, $a$ and $b$. We know that:
-
The distance between $a$ and $0$ is $7$ units.
-
The distance between $a$ and $b$ is $3$ units.

$b$ is less than $a$.
Determine all possible values for $a$ and for $b$. For each case, write down the modulus of the sum $|a + b|$.
Co-ordinates on the plane
Integers are also used to locate points on the co-ordinate plane, which has two axes meeting at the origin: a horizontal one (the $x$-axis) and a vertical one (the $y$-axis). Each point is written as an ordered pair $(x, y)$.
The midpoint of a segment in the co-ordinate plane is found by averaging the coordinates: for $A(x_1, y_1)$ and $C(x_2, y_2)$ it is $\left(\frac{x_1 + x_2}{2}, \frac{y_1 + y_2}{2}\right)$. This is the same idea as on the number line, done once for $x$ and once for $y$.
Depths below sea level are negative integers: a probe at $12$ m below the surface is at $-12$, and a probe deeper than it has a smaller integer, for example $-18 < -12$. You can also work out a quadrant from clues. If the opposite of $x$ is negative, then $x$ is positive. If $|y| = -y$ with $y \neq 0$, then $y$ is negative. So $(x, y)$ is in quadrant IV.

In a strategy game, a pirate ship moves around a map with coordinates. Its starting position is the point $P(-3, 2)$.
- a) If the ship moves $5$ units to the right, what is its new abscissa coordinate ($x$)?
- b) If from that new position it moves down $4$ units, what is its ordinate coordinate ($y$)?
- c) In your notebook, plot the starting point and the final point (the ship's position after the two movements) on a coordinate axis system.

In the following Cartesian plane, a robot starts at point $P(-2, 3)$. It makes three consecutive moves:
-
It moves $5$ units to the right.
-
It moves $7$ units down.
-
It moves $4$ units to the left.
In which quadrant does the robot end up? Do this in your notebook. State the final coordinates of the point and calculate the modulus of the sum of its new x-coordinate ($x$) and its new y-coordinate ($y$).
Back to the start: The forecast of $-4$ °C, the debt of €15 (written $-15$) and the diver at $-20$ m are represented with negative integers because they express values below a reference point ($0$ °C freezing point, a balance of €0 and $0$ m sea level).
