Monomials and operations with monomials
Aoife is playing a video game on her mobile phone, collecting red gems worth $x$ points each. On screen 1 she earns $5x$, on screen 2 she earns $8x$ and on screen 3 she loses $3x$. How many points does she have in total? To find out, you need to work with monomials.
What a monomial is
Not everything that contains letters is a single term: $\frac{4}{x}$ is not (the letter is in the denominator) and neither is $\sqrt{x}$ (the index is not a natural number). $2 + a$ is not either: it is two terms separated by a $+$.
Two terms are like terms if they have exactly the same algebraic part: $4x^2$ and $2x^2$ are; $4x^2$ and $4x$ are not, even though they look similar.

Look at the following series of figures built with white and grey square tiles. Mathematicians call these "growth patterns".
-
If $n$ represents the figure number, write a monomial representing the number of grey tiles in figure $n$.
-
Write a binomial for the number of white tiles in figure $n$.
-
Add both expressions to obtain the expression for the total number of tiles. Which figure would have a total of 101 tiles?

Aoife is reviewing operations with monomials and has written down these two statements in her notebook:
1) $4x^3 + 5x^3 = 9x^6$
2) $2a + 3b = 5ab$
Identify the conceptual error Aoife has made in each of the two operations. Explain, using the distributive property and the definition of like terms, why her reasoning is incorrect. Finally, write the corrected answers for both cases.

At a Met Éireann weather station in the Wicklow Mountains, snowfalls are analyzed to evaluate the weight supported by building roofs. In a storage warehouse with a flat rectangular roof, the length of the warehouse is $4x$ meters, the width is $3x$ meters, and the thickness of the snow layer accumulated after a storm is measured as $0.05x$ meters.
- a) Calculate the simplified monomial that models the volume of snow deposited on the roof (in $\text{m}^3$). Clearly specify its coefficient, its literal part, and its degree.
- b) Knowing that each cubic meter of this snow has an average mass of $120\text{ kg}$, obtain the simplified monomial that represents the total mass of snow accumulated on the roof.
- c) If a technical inspection determines that $x = 2\text{ meters}$, calculate the actual total mass of snow supported by the warehouse and reflect on whether the calculated roof dimensions ($4x$ in length by $3x$ in width) are realistic.

Make up two monomials, $M_1$ and $M_2$, that satisfy all of these conditions at the same time:
-
Both must have $a^2b$ as their literal part.

Their sum must be a monomial whose coefficient is $-10$.

When dividing $M_1$ by $M_2$, the result must be the number $4$.

A "Mystery Monomial" has lost some of its parts after passing through an operation machine. Your mission is to reconstruct the original equation by finding the missing monomial in each case (represented by the symbol $?$):
- a) $? + 7a^2b - 3a^2b = 10a^2b$
- b) $(? \times 5x^4) : 2x^2 = 15x^5$
- c) $\frac{24y^{10}}{?} = 4y^5$
Putting it all together: combined expressions
Real problems mix brackets, sums and products of monomials. The usual order of operations (BIDMAS) still applies: brackets and indices first, then multiplications and divisions, and additions and subtractions last.
To raise a term to a power, raise the coefficient to that power and multiply the index of each letter by the power. For example, $(2x^3)^2 = 2^2 x^{3 \cdot 2} = 4x^6$, because $(2x^3)^2 = 2x^3 \cdot 2x^3$. When a fraction has a negative coefficient, divide the coefficients with their signs first: $\dfrac{-12x^5}{3x^2} = -4x^3$. Before combining, check the algebraic part of each block: you can only add or subtract like terms (the same letters with the same indices).
Apply the distributive property to expand the brackets and collect like terms in the following expression: $3 \times (2x + 4) + 5 \times (x - 2)$
Apply the distributive property to expand the brackets and collect like terms in the following expression:
$3 \times (2x + 4) + 5 \times (x - 2)$

We propose analyzing the following combined operation with monomials:
$$\frac{(6x^3) \times (-4x^5)}{-2x^4} - 5x^4$$- a) Estimate without calculating: Before carrying out the numerical operations step by step, reason what the degree of the resulting monomial from the first block (the algebraic fraction) must be and what sign its coefficient will have. From this, deduce whether it will be possible to subtract the term $- 5x^4$ from it.
- b) Check by calculating: Solve the expression step by step respecting the order of operations: first multiply the monomials in the numerator, then divide by the denominator, and finally perform the subtraction of like terms.
- c) Evaluate: Compare the final result with your predictions from section a). Did the degree and the sign match what you had previously reasoned? Justify why the final result is a monomial and not an irreducible two-term expression.
