Solving Right Triangles

Before you start, make sure you know: Right triangles (Secondary Year 4 (second cycle, academic track))

How does a surveyor know how tall the Columbus Lighthouse (Faro a Colón) is without climbing it? They measure an angle and a distance on the ground, and let trigonometry do the rest. On this page you use the right triangle to measure heights, distances, and slopes that you can't reach with a tape measure.

Solving a right triangle

"Solving" a triangle means finding all of its sides and all of its angles. In a right triangle you already know the right angle: you only need two more pieces of data (two sides, or one side and an acute angle).

Recall the ratios for an acute angle $\alpha$: $\sin\alpha=\dfrac{\text{opposite}}{\text{hypotenuse}}$, $\cos\alpha=\dfrac{\text{adjacent}}{\text{hypotenuse}}$, $\tan\alpha=\dfrac{\text{opposite}}{\text{adjacent}}$.

Inaccessible heights: angle of elevation

The angle of elevation is the angle that the line of sight toward a high point makes with the horizontal. It is the classic way to measure a height without climbing it.

Angle of depression

When you look down from a high point, the angle between the horizontal and the line of sight is the angle of depression. Because they are alternate interior angles between parallel lines, it is equal to the angle of elevation seen from the low point.

A vertical post casts a shadow on flat ground. At a point in the morning, when the sun's angle of elevation is $\alpha = 30^\circ$, the shadow measures $L$ meters. A couple of hours later, when the sun's angle of elevation has increased to $\beta = 45^\circ$, it is found that the shadow has shortened by exactly $10$ meters. Figures that break down into right triangles
