Matrix Operations

At a corner store (a colmado), the week's sales are kept in one table and the prices in another. Adding two tables of the same size is easy, but how do you combine the quantities with the prices to get the total sales? That is where the matrix product comes in, which has its own logic: you multiply "row by column," it is not commutative, and it lets you raise a matrix to a power. Mastering these operations is the first step toward the inverse matrix, determinants, and systems of equations.

Addition and scalar multiplication

Addition of two 2x2 matrices by adding the entries in corresponding positions 12 03 + 4−1 21 = 51 24 each entry, with its partner: 1+4=5, 2+(−1)=1, 0+2=2, 3+1=4

In developing a new drone engine, an engineering team uses a transfer matrix $M$ that relates vibrations at three structural points. The matrix is given by:

$$M = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & a & 0 \\ 0 & 0 & b \\ 0 & 0 & 0 \end{pmatrix}$$

where $a$ and $b$ are non-zero real parameters.

  1. a) Prove that matrix $M$ is nilpotent and determine its index of nilpotency (the smallest exponent $k$ such that $M^k = O$).
  2. b) Use the previous result to calculate matrix $S = I + M + M^2 + M^3 + \dots + M^{100}$ in a simplified way, where $I$ is the identity matrix of order 3.

How the product is calculated: row by column

Calculation of the row 1, column 1 entry: row of the first matrix (2, 1, 3) is paired with the column of the second (1, 2, 3) and the result is 13 213 123 13 c₁₁ = 2·1 + 1·2 + 3·3 = 13

A very useful case: a row matrix times a column matrix gives a single number. If in an order you buy 2 sodas at $\text{RD}\$60$ and 3 bags of bread at $\text{RD}\$25$, the total is $(2 \quad 3)\begin{pmatrix} 60 \\ 25 \end{pmatrix} = 120 + 75 = 195$ pesos.
