Scientific Notation and Significant Figures

Light travels at $300\,000\,000\ \text{m/s}$ and a red blood cell measures barely $0.000008\ \text{m}$. Writing so many zeros is awkward and easy to get wrong. That is why in Physical Science we use scientific notation, a short way to write very large or very small numbers. By the end of this page you will also know how many digits of a measurement can be trusted.
