Forms of Energy and Transformations

At the corner store, the fan motor spins, the cell phone charges, and the juice stays cold in the refrigerator. When there is a blackout, everything stops. What is it that runs out when the power goes off and that your body also uses to run? It is energy: you can't see it, but you can recognize it by what it does: move, heat, light up, or make something sound.

Forms of energy

A moving car, a lit stove, and a light bulb lighting a dark room are very different changes. What do movement, heat, and light have in common? They all need energy.

Six illustrated forms of energy: a moving car (kinetic), a book on a high shelf (potential), a battery and an apple (chemical), charges flowing through a cable with a plug (electrical), a cup of hot water with steam (thermal), and a light bulb giving off light (light). Kinetic h Potential + Chemical Electrical Thermal Light

Work and energy

When you push a car that ran out of gas, you set it in motion: you give it energy. That energy doesn't come from nowhere: it comes from you.

If a person lifts a $5\ \text{kg}$ box onto a shelf $2\ \text{m}$ high, the potential energy of the box increases by $\Delta E_p = 5 \times 10 \times 2 = 100\ \text{J}$. That is the work the person did, and that energy came from the chemical energy of their food.

Energy in the human body

Your body has no plug and no gas tank, but it runs, thinks, and keeps a temperature of 37 °C. Where does it get its energy?

From food. Carbohydrates, fats, and proteins store chemical energy. With the oxygen you breathe, cells release it little by little and store it in a molecule called ATP, which works like the cell's "rechargeable battery": every time a muscle contracts or a neuron sends a signal, it uses up ATP.

The energy in food is measured in calories (cal) or kilocalories (kcal): $1\ \text{kcal} = 4.184\ \text{kJ}$. A plate of mangú with eggs provides about 400 kcal.

Your body is not a perfect machine: only about a quarter of the energy is converted into useful work (movement). The rest leaves as heat, which is why you sweat when you exercise.

When a gymnast lands on a trampoline, her muscles and the mat work together: the mat stores elastic energy as it stretches and gives it back as it recovers. But to go higher and higher each time, the gymnast adds extra energy with her legs, and that energy comes from the chemical energy of her food, transformed with the help of ATP.

Measuring and paying for energy: the kilowatt-hour

upper reservoir lower reservoir night day
  1. a) Write down the sequence of transformations at night, when pumping the water up, and during the day, when releasing it.

Back to the beginning: what runs out in a blackout is the supply of electrical energy; your body, in contrast, uses the chemical energy of food, which it transforms into movement and heat. In both cases the energy doesn't disappear: it changes form.
